stringhalt or back out????

Hi there, more issues..
My mare has started to throw her back leg up in the air, almost like its "locked" and she has to get it going again. My mate mentioned stringhalt which im told her mother had.
A. Can this be inherited?
B Would it come in a mare of 10 years old or should she have developed it by now?
C. Will it afftect her normal happy hack lifestyle.
D. Am i totally off the mark here and its something else?
I have also noticed that (having only moved there recently) that the two rather large youngsters in the field have mounted her when she's in season, they have been gelded thankfully

but i wondered if one of them could of caused her some damage with the humping she's had.. needless to say she tells them to bugger off now!
Would it be very apparent if her back was out? On Friday im going to get her in properly and have a look at her pelvis etc and trot her up to see if i can identify what the problem seems to be. She doesnt appear to be in pain and lets me lift the leg but she does this weird quick action with it, not every time she moves???
Anyone else dealt with similar or am i being paranoid?
 
sounds like stringhalt if it mainly happens after your horse has stood still for a while....................my horse has always had it and competes affiliated SJ, I just keep him out so that he can walk around more.
 
I think stringlhalt can be inherited, it was always said to be a condition more afflicted to draught horses. My ID x TB developed it at the age of 7 or more. The vet thought it may have been brought out as a result of an old injury resulting in a chipped pelvis.
My boy was quite unaffected by it and carried on eventing as such like quite happily. The odd person told he he was lame

I sometimes notice racehorses when parading in the paddock with it, so it can't be much of a hinderance!
It does sound a bit like it could be stringhalt, they kind of snatch the leg of te ground, it can affect one or both hind legs.
But it could also be that she's done something to her back, sorry not much conclusive help

I had a horse with stringhalt, it was fine, he never appeared to be in pain but sometimes had difficulty on short turns etc. It can be hereditary but it can also be caused by injury. One can be corrected by surgery and the other can't. It depends what you want to use your horse for, but I personally wouldn't rule out buying a horse with stringhalt as long as it fit all my other criteria.

It sounds like string halt, my horse has it, and does exactly what you say your does, I have had him for 14 years and it seems to be worse when he is unfit, the fitter he is the better it is. I used to do riding club level xc and sj. He is only a happy hacker now as he is 28 but still thinks he is a 5 year old.
 
thanks for all your replies so far, she has only just started to do this and ive had her for 6 months now. She did used to race and is full TB. Think a video is the best thing for you guys to look at.
 
Our horse had just started to move a hind lig in a string halt kind of way in canter and it turned out that he had hurt his back. The movement has gone now that his back is getting better - sounds to me like she could have been hurt by the geldings mounting her.
