I have seen a horse on horsemart which I like, but the ad says it has stringhalt, but it doesn't affect its performance - I have no clue what stringhalt is!

would you buy a horse with stringhalt or steer well clear? it sounds perfect apart from this.

It is an exaggerated movement of a hind leg and can have several levels of severity. My huibbys old horse had stringhalt. It only showed in walk and he wasn't lame in any way. As to whether I would buy or not would depend on what I wanted to do with the horse.

Oh, thanks - just hacking about mainly and maybe a bit of jumping, nothing major - maybe hunting at some point (nerves dependant!)

Stringhalt is the exaggerated movement of one or both hind limbs, the abnormality is most evident at the walk especially if asked to back, it may disappear at the trot but can be seen sometimes at all paces. The condition may be intermittent and remain static or can deteriate. It usually occurs in adult horses, is gradual in onset, and may be
slowly progressive. Unless the gait is abnormally severe the horse can perform adequately, though not in dressage.

My girl was stabbed in the hind leg by a pitchfork whilst in livery 10 years ago. This has since resulted in stringhalt.

It hasnt stopped her from getting on with life as normal. every now and again when walking on the road, you feel her lift the hind slightly higher than usual ans stomp down.. im so used to it now! I have once had a driver stop me to ask what she was doing - but this has been the only comment. xx
