Hiya i have a 2 yo warm blood colt. His got stringhalt but only noticeable in walk, If anyone had great knowledge of this, would be be ok for show jumping etc?? its not noticeable in trot on canter

when my mare was 1 she started systoms like stringhalt, was told to just keep a eye on her, but when 2 got worse and worse in stable, as need exercise. well cut long story short took to best vet i could find and was told if he slit a sinue in 2 back legs will release tension and should work. done it there and then and never looked back, she is now 7 yr old, but i think sinu grows back i notice her stamps her feet abit now so might need it done again cost £200 5 years ago, . but i keep her out 24/7 as she would be worse in a stable. so might need done again. check it out she lives a normal life had foals been riding loves to do everything.

So you suggest to keep him out in the field so his constantly moving?? Im going to wait a little while before i think about having him operated on. Did your mare have her op before u broke her in?

i would ask your vet as soon as, so that you know what to do for the best. I know it's a pain, but they are the best to advise you when to break in and stuff - and what the prognosis may be.

Lots of horses do have stringhalt, and it doesn't seem to be a major issue. Good luck ! sm xx

Definitely speak to your vet a supplement high in selenium can sometimes help though not always and not sure if you can feed a youngster it or not.

My girl has stringhalt in one leg, noticeable in walk and if she gets stressed then we get a little temper smash down with that leg (quite amusing like a child stamping foot - I know that's not what it is but does remind me of that).

However when she begins to work properly from behind the stringhalt disappears, and is not evident at all in canter, it has not interferred with her one bit.

I believe and I may be shot down here as can't produce any names but there have been some very successful racehorses and showjumpers that have stringhalt.

my mare got her op before she was broke got her done at 2. went to vet and he said what it was, said just take few mins, so shaved inside leg each side, steralised, made a slit and found the sinu and slit it, that was that, he cleaned up and never stiched as slit was so small and minor it closed its self in few days and she has never looked back, just bring it up with your vet, when she got home he said put straight in field and all was great, but years later now and starting to show signs so might need done again.
she has lived normal live, put in field 24/7 as i find if in stable shows minor signs of it, but in field she is always moving so is fine. good luck, ask vet might be able to do it with yours. cost £200 could be more now.
