Hiya, I've got a scruffy haired ibizan hound who has floaty wirey hair that sticks out and above the smooth part of his coat. He loves it when I cuddle on the sofa with him and pull his hair out (the wirey floaty hairey stuff).

So...is it normal for a dog to like his hair being pulled out? why do people strip coats? are the wispy wirey bits just a normal part of coat variation?

Coats are stripped about twice a year to remove some of the dense soft undercoat and leave the harsh outercoat for eg. in a Cairn terrier. The coat then lies smoother and is often used on show dogs.It can also be cooler in the summer for them.Of course most dogs dislikes this and it is not a pleasant procedure for them but some come to accept it if done by an experienced dog groomer. The harsh outercoat repels the rain and if it is the characteristic of the breed it should ideally be left. Many people shave their dogs for the summer and find the outercoat does not grow back as it was, hence usually stripping is suited to show dogs to maintain the proper coat.

I have a schnauzer whose hard wire coat is waterproof, and is stripped each week as I " roll the coat". She is not a show dog but I do this to pull out the dead top hairs and remove excess undercoat.she enjoys the stripping,it isn't painful as it is dead hair only ,being gently pulled...in fact she often goes to sleep when I do this with a big grin on her face. Her coat is less prone to dermatitis and skin problems as the follicles are free when the dead hairs are removed. With a clipped coat the dead hair shafts remain as cut stumps and the new hair has to force its way past these. This is why clipped coats are often wavy.
It sounds like the Ibizan hound also enjoys the attention when you pull the loose coat from her.
Your dog has a broken coat, which simply means it is a mixture of wire and smooth hairs.
