It's a 3 ring snaffle. If you have a look at this website they explain the uses of all the bits - you can also try one and return it if it isn't suitable.

try a bit that puts pressure on its poll and nose in stead of just the mouth that might work better than putting a stronger bit in could you could cause your self some problems if his mouth comes even stronger wear do you go then!

Just don't expect to actually receive the bit or be able to contact them!

Hi Rancher...I have a big strong clydesdale x and always ride her in a waterford snaffle too,so she can't lean on the bit (also it suits her best as she has a big fleshy mouth and the waterford wraps round without any hard edges).Since changing to the waterford she is much lighter in the mouth as she can't take a hold in it.How specifically is he hard to stop please, does he bear down on the reins, does he put his head down at all, or high up?what would happen if you gave him the reins in canter for a few paces and have you tried this? Can you turn him in canter to slow him down...have his teeth been checked recently?

I would second the 3 ring gag, I had a tip from Tim Stockdale years ago to put a curb chain on the gag, it worked fantastically on my v strong Fell Pony! You can usually buy the curb chain and hooks separately but be prepared for some hard work getting it onto the bit

Incidentally the reason my mare was so strong was because someone had put a Pelham in her snaffle mouth when she was out on loan

PM me if you can't get hold of one as I still have mine and don't have the horse anymore(hope I don't regret that as we've just bought a Haflinger
