Having spent several hours hand picking sycamore pods, a task which seems never ending, I came up with the idea of using a leaf vacuum to do the job.......

- does anyone use one for this purpose?
- if so what make?

There are many available, some at eye watering cost, but if would help get rid of the bl**dy things, would be a worthwhile investment. I appreciate it would need to be a petrol or battery powered model.

Any thoughts/ideas?

I’m going with a large petrol leaf blower once everything has finished falling. I’ve only got an acre to clear and have been raking and removing religiously but a leaf blower will be so much quicker and easier especially in the longer grass. Then in spring before they go back on the track I will mow to get rid of any seedlings.

So not a stupid idea then! Most leaf blowers I have seen also vacuum so could try either option.

We mow the seedlings in spring but would be nice to get the majority of the seed pods up before they get a chance to germinate....

Many thanks!

this is a post I put on another thread about this. I'm not really sure why anyone would want to blow them when you want them sucked up into a container. I don't know what sort of leaf suckers are available but I think the idea of sucking would be very effective in clearing them.

I think the thing that would work the best to get both leaves, sycamore seeds and even pine needles off grass be it long or short is a paddock cleaner. That simply sucks the seeds up. I don't really have sycamore but I have hoovered up pine needles and leaves. It gets the grass very clean. I would have thought for a anyone trying to get rid of sycamore seeds a sucking machine rather that a blowing one would work the best.

Agreed, would far rather collect and destroy......have found a grass sweeper that goes on the back of a quad which also might be worth investigating.

I had this discussion recently with my OH who's company sells pressure washers, vacuums, scrubber dryers etc. He said a good strong leaf vacuum would cost £280. I decided to continue with a rake / broom lol.

Depends on what you have available. I already have a heavy duty leaf blower and am not about to spend a lot of money on a vacuum. I could blow them into thick hedgerow which isn’t accessible, however, I will blow into a small area on very short grass so I can see them and then do exactly what I’ve been doing all summer. Rake, collect and put them in the bonfire. Blowing them just takes a hell of a lot of work out of it.
