There has been some discussion on this at our yard. Someone got some shampoo and it smelt like cherry bakewell. Her horse was not happy with the smell as it was so strong. Even when she put it in a bucket with water her horse was going mad. She didnt use it. I wonder if these products are tested for smell reaction.
Should we use these strong smelling products on them because we think they smell nice?
Imagine being stuck with a smell that drives you mad and you cannot get rid of it. How does this mask other smells that a horse might smell.

I used to put peppermint on the fur around my boys sarcoids to keep the flies away - that was strong but sometimes it's necessary. Scented shampoo's are completely redundant though, it's all owner marketing. Sometimes when I put too much perfume on my chest it's most off putting and gives me a right headache, I'd hate to have someone douse me in sickly smelling stuff against my will 😂 (not insinuating that horses think like us here!)

I’ve used that naff no rinse cooling wash that smells quite strongly minty, my pony doesn’t seem to care but her field buddy does lick her afterwards 😂

Not sure about cherry Bakewell though

It could be nothing to do with the smell it could be due to the horse not liking being bathed . My horse hates baths the only strong smelling thing she didn’t like was very strong fly spray

I hate scents that make me smell like something I'd eat. Can't stand coconut shampoos/shower gels for the same reason. I don't feel clean! My mare absolutely detests most things smelly, but she tolerates peppermint very well. I've been using up my Farrier's Shire Oil on her baldy rubbed bits, as she stands nicely for it, whereas if she even heard the lid come off the neem oil she was gone - voom!

I wonder if sweet/fruity smells attract flies too
Last year my son was using some sort of sickly-smelling shower gel and was a wasp magnet but it may have been a coincidence
