Hi all Im looking into worming programmes and wondered if Strongid c is available in the uk, it's a daily wormer, if it is does anyone have any links to where from and does anyone use it?
Its the daily one which paralyses the worms and they get passed out I think: it's not commonly available or used over here I dont think.
The practice in UK is either to worm on a regular programme or (more favoured now) to use worm counts to assess the levels of most types of worms, with only an annual encysted small redworm dose and (unless blood tested for) a dose of tapewormer as routine. Often combined with paddock rotation (ideally with other species like sheep or cattle) and poo picking (or if not possible, harrowing of pasture in hot weather).
Yeah I'm fully aware of the common practices over here having used them myself for years but am considering using this product instead along with poo picking, worm counts and the odd ivermectin dose. Just wondering whether anyone else uses this product and where they get it, I'm pretty sure I could buy it in if necessary but hoping for a uk stockist.
Strongid C is used extensively in the USA and its use is linked to very high levels of anthelminitc resistance. It is not licensed for use in horses in the UK so you would not be able to acquire it legally.
Let's hope it never gets a licence here. As said above it will simply lead to resistance to that drug and then it will be no good at all to treat your horses worms. We should be reducing drug use not increasing it.
Actually from what I've read it is not linked to resistance, there was a lot of scepticism over there but all tests appear to show that it is doing what it claims to do. I for one would welcome another drug in the fight to combat worms, they are becoming resistant to the ones we already have so where is the difference?!
It is not uncommon practice to use such programmes with other animals over here, But I can understand why some people would be sceptical of the approach, I remember the scepticism that surrounded relying on worm counts when that method started to take a hold over here!
