My first mare I've ever had. Had her 4 yrs this year. She's pretty "mareish" and I get on her today. She's fine in the box and to tack up etc. I get on and she plants herself refusing to budge then wees all over the road. She refuses to lead on hack, v stroppy and wants to follow the gelding in front. I borrow mates crop and "ask" her to lead which she does after some discussion...
Throughout the ride she stops, wees, squirts and just generally stares at the gelding. She was a brood mate in the past. She's never behaved like this in season before so us this normal? She's usually fine to ride but was really hard to get going today. I
Know what I'm like at that time of the month but wondered if there was anything I could give her to help her out a bit? My first mare so please any thoughts or ideas appreciated :-)

Anything with oestress will help stop her being so hormonal! There are loads of suppliments for mares specifically to combat their hormones when in season (they're usually worse in spring and autumn anyway so maybe that's why she's especially bad now), or general anti-stress supplements which may alternatively help. I use 'frisky mare' which comes in a green tub and is herbal. Normally give one scoop but about 1 and three quarters when she's really in season. Hope you get something sorted - mares can be a nightmare sometimes but the behaviour you're describing sounds normal. x

My chestnut had one particular gelding that she really fancied. When she was in full season she wanted to stop and pee at him. I found that the best thing was to ride her in a really forwards way as we came up to him and to not let her stop. If I could keep her going, all was fine again once we were passed his field.

Lol. They're soooo disgusting! I'll try a supplement for her I think she's just never behaved like that before. Gimme a gelding any day! ;-) xx

One of our mares is fine, the other can be very stroppy.

Our saddle fitter recommended chaste berry (i thinks its in supplement anyway)

One scoop a day and she is a different horse.

Faracat that's brilliant! They sure know how to embarrass us! She positively "winked" her way around our hack ...

:o :o :o

My sister and her non-horsey boyfriend came over and we went to say hello to the neds. They all come over and suddenly I head sister's BF saying in a rather horrified voice, 'he's got a wang on!' It took me a second to work out the Yorkshire slang... but it was obvious what he meant once I looked at the gelding. :o
