Stubben cord girth vs other cord.girths?

I'm trialling a Stubben cord girth but the one I'm using is probably a bit big. I've bought and trialled a few different girths so was really hoping to buy second hand just in case the smaller size isn't right - I'm not having much luck finding one second hand in the right size.

I have found Shires & Townfields do their own version for quite considerably less.

Are they comparable or am I better off just paying full price for a new Stubben version?

Are you looking for a normal or dressage length girth. I have a short girth I'm willing to part with.

We bought the Townfields one as a trial run before paying the extra for the Stubben. It's been excellent, our very round Dales mare approves so have never paid out for the "real" thing.

In our case it is because our mare is round, not fat, and every girth slid forward into her armpits pulling the saddle forward or allowed the saddle to slide to the side. The cord girth is wide and holds its place correctly and comfortably.

I have x2 black long Stubben cord girths about to be put on Vinted. I got them after a cheaper version rubbed. I now have a monoflap so no longer needed.

I have Stubben and Townfields, the buckles are slightly bigger on Townfields but quality is comparable

In my experience if you wash your cord girth enough times it’ll end up short enough

I think mine is about 8” shorter than it was to start with and yes it has only been washed cold. And I do stretch it out after washing.

I have fortunately downsized horses so it’s still in regular use

Thanks everyone, it seems like the Townfield version might be worth a try. Unless anyone is looking to re-home a 42" or a 44" Stubben cord version ...?

I was worried the cord wouldn't be so soft.

I got a Stuben string girth for stability with a round native, it does help but the girth does move backwards, quite a bit!

Sorry to resurrect this but how do I clean my Stubben girth?

The smaller size isn't working brilliantly but being second hand it came with no instructions - is it machine washable?

I used to hand wash mine with baby shampoo and line dry.

I washed mine in the machine, in a pillowcase with socks on the buckles.

I'm not 100% sure mine is a Stubben, but it looks identical to the ones I've seen in the tack shop. Mind you, it also looks the same as the no-name one for a third of the price at the other tack store.

In any case: all my synthetic and cotton cord girths get washed on cold in the washing machine in a small size padded laundry bag (I think intended for bras?). I use our regular unscented/gentle detergent (ours doesn't come standard with enzymes but I think yours do?). If it's very dirty I might scrub by hand beforehand with some dish soap. The synthetic ones come out looking like new, and the cotton ones come out much improved.

Then hang to dry.
