New to the board! My daughter doesn't want to wear her BP for SJ anymore, and it does cause a few arguments at times. I have seen a new style BP which is a step down in terms of protection but a load better than no BP. I would be grateful to hear from anyone who has one, or anything similar, or feels strongly either way. Thanks in advance!

My body protector protected my back massively when I had a fall jumping. Without it I dread to think what would've happened. She needs to wear a body protector when jumping though can't comment on which one. If that's the only style she will wet something is far better than nothing.

Which BP is she currently in? The stubben is really nice and comfortable but literally only protects the spine, not the ribcage which is why it is a level 2. You could look at some of the Racesafe national hunt vests which are only a level 1 but which do have some covering of the ribcage

Why doesn't she want to wear a BP?

How old is she? Our rule has always been 'No choice - wear a BP or don't ride'. We have just bought our youngster a lovely new Airowear BP which she finds comfortable (and looks really good in too).

If it is because your girl doesn't like the feel of the one she has now (what BP make does she have now?) and needs a more comfortable one, take her to try a few out and buy one.

If she really won't wear a BP, then how about introducing her to one of the Air Jackets (Hit Air or Helite for example, my two preferred makes). Lots of professionals wear them.

And if she is still reluctant, show her some of the falls on youtube - the videos of where the air vests have saved the rider from very serious injury (or possibly worse) make for scary viewing.

I hope she decides to wear one or the other - or both.

Do keep us up to date with what she decides.

Good luck.

agree with above, why not try an air jacket?

A couple make some which just look like gilets and i believe there is even a show jacket version which might work?

Some though, are able to be worn without thus is their design - the show jacket and gilet i mentioned earlier

What good are they as the most important time you need it it most likely will not have triggered. Seriously if you are wearing it for protection in the first place surely BP comes first.

I can sympathise OP - I presume your daughter is a junior competing BS? In some areas the kids have a real "thing" against BP's - my daughter got bullied massively because she wore one. That stubben one does present something of a compromise I suppose - but it is a compromise. (And obviously you can't use it for pony club, riding club or XC) But I can see that it would suit the very style conscious junior BS'rs.

I guess it comes down to family dynamics and what you are prepared to have a battle over. For me I did not want to do anything to compromise my daughter's safety - but thankfully she also saw the logic in my views and we didn't fight about it. I simply enlisted the help of the Academy trainer to limit the cattiness. And then switched to eventing...

What about something like a RaceSafe BP, which are very body conforming and streamlined - they can also be made in custom colours to be a bit jazzy (or black or navy to blend in)

Much more appealing to the eye than the old fashioned blocky style ones, and streamlined enough to wear underneath a competition jacket.

The new provent is really comfortable, and quite slimline. Only comes in black though. Not a close-up, but I'm wearing one in this, over my show jacket https://drive.google.com/open?id=0By5OU2AUMZ23aV9UQXJBU3A5SXM

For comparisons sake it may be important to note that the level two grading is for motorcycles for that product, so probably not comparable to rider ones.

If she is young, and you are funding it then she wears what you want her to if she wishes to continue.

As a teen I wore one quite a lot, as an adult I choose not to quite a lot as I find them restrictive and they make me ache.

We also had a very large discussion about this the other day, an air jacket is not meant to be worn with a body protector, it is a total choice. wearing a BP does not make the air jacket perform any differently.

There's a lady in our PC whose daughters wear a similar design BP for general rallies and showjumping. They have proper BPs for XC though.

I think they are a good compromise.

My LO is only 6 though with short legs, and still tends to get jumped off his pony on occasion so I'll be sticking with a level 3 for everything but flatwork for a while longer.

I used to get really embarrassed and self conscious wearing a BP at shows. In BS juniors it was few and far between as to the amount of people that wore them and when I moved up to seniors at 14 I would get funny looks off a lot of people in the collecting ring.

I now wear a helite air jacket so at home or course hires I either wear it just as the gilet or I wear a softshell jacket on top so it has room to expand.

At shows I wear it under my animo show jackets with just the poppers done up (not the zip) so the jacket will pop open giving room for the air jacket to expand.

I much prefer it this way as its discreet and I still look smart and I don't get any funny looks off anyone. I wear this set up in FEI shows in Europe and BS shows at home just fine
