I have my eye on a Stubben saddle

When I was a kid they were THE saddles to lust after and beautifully made

My question is are they still good quality these days?

any replies appreciated thank you

I had always yearned for a stubben, then when I came to buy a saddle I was put off buying one.... however another opportunity arose and I bought my dream ... a stubben.... its true you either love em or hate em... I love em!! (and you do need a horse thats the right shape for a stubben)

I used to work for two SJ riders, one of whom was sponsored by Stubben. She had the full works - two jump saddles, bridles, headcollars, girths and as much of their saddle soap as you'd ever need. Personally I really like them. They look gorgeous, are nice to ride in and the ones that she had seemed to fit on more or less any horse.

I think they are quite a specific shape and probably not likely to be a great fit for a Welsh A or are you planning on buying something to fit it ;)

Thank you all, nice to hear its generally positive

FW - its for a section B who will be 13.2 when fully grown. Its an odd thing to do but I have the opportunity to buy this saddle now when the pony will not be backed for several months, my logic being that I wont have the spare money later on and if the Stubben didn't fit I would have a marketable saddle to sell on, I'd love it to fit but if nothing else it will be a spot of money for a suitable saddle

Two of you have mentioned them being a specific shape, what sort of horse would you say they'd fit please?

I think they are unlikely to suit a Native type as they tend to have a curved tree when most require a relatively flat one, I am unsure why you would want one for your lovely pony as they are not show/ WHP type saddles as far as I know and most will be fairly bulky. for the same reason I think it would not be for you I suspect selling it on if a small size may also prove tricky, a Fylde or similar will always hold value in the pony world.

I have a very old Stubben in the tack room, not been used for years but hate to throw it out as I doubt it has any value other than sentimental to me.

I've never really seen stubbens on natives/ ponies, they are more a horse 'type' fit. I personally wouldn't take a punt on it, its unlikely to fit and even if it fits now, whats to say he wont have outgrown it by the time he goes to get backed? Agree with poster above fyldes are a safe bet for ponies, can you not save the money you can spend on the stubben now, to buy a saddle at a later date?

Well A or B, it doesn't matter it's not a flat native shaped tree and I doubt it will be useful.

Plus, it is nearly always the case that things cost a fortune when you are looking to buy and are worth next to nothing when you want to sell so unless it had a good chance of being useful I wouldn't bother.

You would be far better to keep an eye out for a little native pony saddle I would say.

You're all right of course, thank you

When I am a millionaire I will buy a Stubben saddle just like it and just look at it every day

In the meantime I will look for something more suitable

Have got umpteen Stubbens accumulated over the years - just never got round to selling the older ones. The older style ones - Siegfried, Columbo, Parzival, Romanus etc tend to be quite heavy and deep seated, although unbelievably hardwearing. Nowadays I mostly ride in the newer style. My personal favourite is the Edelweiss NT de luxe - already got 2 of these and added another at the weekend for a new horse - this time with a biomex seat, so ultra comfortable (NT stands for new tree, so is built on their new & very lightweight tree)
Have also got a couple of Genesis and a Scandica II which are really nice too.
As someone said earlier, you either love 'em or hate 'em!
