I will try to keep this short but have had the vet and the farrier try to get at a foot abcess and it still wont come to an head, she has now been poulticed for 9 days and still nothing. Farrier had a go today recomended by the vet she had a go last week with no success.

I have hot tubbed to try and soften the sole and still nothing, so my question is as anyone else had a abcess that as taken a long time to burst through and how long did it take.

She is also in foal and is weight baring on the abcessed foot but is lame and is on 1 bute a day, once the bute has worn of she is quite sore. I will be talking to the vet again tomorrow to let her know that the farrier has been unsuccessful, to see what she recomends I do next. Is it just a waiting game.

I had this with my daughters first horse. He was very lame and not weight bearing at all. The vet cut enormous amounts off his foot trying to get at it but to no avail - it did eventually burst through the coronary band bringing instant relief. It took over a week I am afraid and that was after being dug out once before a fortnight or so before. It did leave a flaw in the hoof which took nearly a year to grown down and out of the foot. Looked a sight but did not trouble the horse until the last inch when it seperated from the hoof wall, he was lame for a week after that but healed well.

Ironically he has just had an injury on the same foot on the coronary band and there is a hole growing down his hoof - here we go again!!

Are you 100% its afoot abcess? I had a very lame horse 2 weeks ago, abcess burst after 3 days and is STILL draining! farrier and vet have cut an enormous amount of hoof away and she has a metal plate across herfoot to protect it. Try hot tubbing with epson salts and hot polticing coronet band and underside of foot, apart from that i don't know what else you can do.

Did you poultice the sole of the foot ? was told that it could come out there so should i poultice both sole and coronary band.

I think it would be worth polticing the coronary band to. I have had several burst out there and they have always taken longer. When Lucy went lame last week the vet kindof polticed her whole foot when she couldn't find the abcess but my farrior found it the next day luckly. I hope your mare gets sorted soon poor girlie.

The vet said it was a abcess and the farrier seems to think it,s looking like that but could find no "tract" where it begins, farrier said she seems sore all over the sole but more so in one place. She also has some bruising on her other sole now from taking pressure off the abcessed foot even though she is on bute.

And with her being in foal is carrying more weight than normal I must admit to getting very worried about her now.

My horse had a horrible abcess and he could barely walk. In the end, after xrays and numerous visits, the vet had to basically dig his foot out so it would all come out. It meant he was off work for a long time whilst the sole grew back. Tubbing with epsom salts and poulticing should help, has the vet xrayed the foot at all?

Yes we did poutice the whole foot as there was no guarentee it would come out through the coronary band. I also agree with epsom salts tubbing in warm water.

My sympathy to your mare - bad enough lugging around a late pregnancy without a sore foot too!!
