Stubborn abscess

My pony was lame in varying degrees with an abscess for quite a long time. Then one day when I was picking his foot out I noticed something sticking out of his frog. It was a bit of wire that he must have stood on and it had been buried but that day had appeared at the surface. I pulled it out with some pliers and a few days later everything cleared up. Neither vet not farrier had previously spotted it. It might be worth having his foot x rayed if things continue.

I know someone whose horse had a bad abscess and it was actually a bruised sole which had formed a haemotoma under the sole. When the vet or farrier (can't remember which one she said) came out and started digging the sole the foot was literally dripping blood like a slow tap. It was quite horrifying but the horse was sorted with 2 days of sugar and iodine as a wet poultice and then a few days more with a dry poultice.
