My younger sisters pony is a stubborn wench!! She has fantastic jumping potential but i like her to do a set of poles on the ground before she goes over any fences. Its just getting her over the poles that is the issue. Shes 8 years old but very green as shes a rescue pony who was beaten so can be a bit nervy, but this isnt nervousness, its just downright stubborn. Sister will ride her positively to the poles and B will flatly refuse, run out, anything to avoid them. Once shes been over once she'll go over no problem. Its just that once! Using a whip isnt an option due to her past and i cant keep leading her over them just the once to get her to go over!!
Any suggestions?

How many poles are you using? Do you mean trot poles or canter?

If it's a real problem, I would start with one pole, let her walk over it, then use 3 poles (not two as they can jump over both) and leave it at that.

To be honest its any number of poles, she does it over one or over three!! Theyre just trotting poles but we walk her over them first or else Hannah would get launched when she ran out or refused!! As soon as shes gone over them once she's absolutely fine, and wont refuse again.

My lad has days like that which is bl00dy frustrating as he also has fantastic jumping potential, out hunting he will fly over walls without a second thought and the some days you put a cross pole in front of him and spend half an hour trying to get him over it!!
I think it's just perseverance really, he has got better with time, and also keep her really ssteady on your approach as it's much easier to keep her straight that way. Also try putting poles down at the entrance to her field/ yard so she gets used to going over them as part of her daily routine. Much easier said than done I know!!
