Stubbs hay feeder

Anyone used one? I need to slow down hay intake because small pony looks like a hippo with feathers. She's just inhaling what I'm putting out but she needs to eat from the floor.

Can't use nets (shod horses) and need a least 3 locations because big mare isn't nice around food.

I normally have piles dotted around the track but this year's hay must be very tasty and the little hippo is inhaling it.

I have hay balls for all my three in stables which are good. I’ve just got two hay savers (one new which was over £200 and one second hand for £80). They have a grid on and you can also buy a smaller holed grid. I like them so far but had to put paving slabs in bottom to stop them tipping over.

Fat cob has a hay ball for his bare paddock and it definitely slows him down. I don't think he's ever managed to empty it.

Mine can empty theirs very quickly! ?

My dad made me one and it’s worked a treat for Faran. If I need to slow him down more then I can put a haynet inside and he can’t get his feet to it ?

I made a hay feeder out of a compost bin- hung a haynet inside it so the hay falls to the bottom of the net where the opening is. I attach it to a tyre to stop it being knocked over.
she’s still eating low to the ground but the hay doesn’t get wasted- also works to fill with straw as a last resort for the fatties. Gives them an option to pick at when hay has run out but it stays dry in there which means it doesn’t matter if they don’t eat it all in one go. Also- cheap as chips to make ?

I had a Stubbs hay roller but the Shetland just pulled everything out of the end hole; a bigger animal might not do that

I keep umming and ahhing about getting some hay balls. However I’m not sure how much hay they actually take?

Apparently the Stubbs ones take just under a nets worth. The hippo pony struggles with treat balls so might slow her down but they all live out so needs to be something which works outdoors. I have a feeling the other two would empty it quickly and baby cob might just stamp on them

I looked at hay savers but I'd need three so gets a bit pricey! Compost bin idea is good - especially when it gets muddier.

They will survive being stamped on. I used it along with hay balls. I prefer the hay balls as it gets them moving, whereas the stubbs just move round in a circle. It does slow them down, but make sure you get the ones with the lids for the filling hole otherwise they empty them quickly.

I had them out in various places on the track as well as haynets hanging in trees and tied into wooden crates.

A compost bin wouldnt last 2 mins with any of mine!

? luckily mine isn’t too brutal with hers, it’s survived two winters already
