Hi just wondering if anyone can help?! I have put my mare in foal this year - she is sitting at around 96days currently. I am a first-time breeder (very excited but also very nervous) and as I've not done this before I am trying hard to get everything right but it is so hard when you hear such different advice everywhere you go. My mare is a CobX, 15.1hh and has been put in foal to a TB. She is an extremely good doer and I have never had any problems keeping weight on her - actually quite the opposite! On a visit to Dublin Horse Show I was told that I should be using a Stud Balancer for her - would be low in Calories but would give her all the extras she needs. Someone else then told me to just put her on a supplement like NAF Mare and Foal with a handful of chaff - then another source said just use a field lick?! I obviously want to do the best for her and I am now so confused as to whether I should be giving her something or just carry on letting her eat grass! She does get a small feed of chaff and muesli once I've ridden which is really just 4 times a week to give her some garlic. Any help or knowledge would be gratefully appreciated!

mine just had some stud cubes after Xmas time, since foaling I have cut the cubes and she has access to a field lick.
I'm uber paranoid about the foal growing too fast and that's why I stopped the cubes

If she has plenty of grass, then she should be fine until three months before birth..then introduce a mare and youngstock mix. A mineral block in the field can do no harm. I always ensure they have ad lib hay through winter too.

Dollydolls just make sure your mare has enough food for her milk and herself too..the foal should not grow too rapidly on a specialist mare and foal mix (they'll pinch some of mum's) but the mare will get what she needs...
