I am in a dilema now. Toffee did not take, took her to stud three times. Vet is happy she is OK to breed and said I have basically been unlucky.

My plan was to keep the foal for me so tht was not a profit thing, have also learnt not a lot of profit could be made in breeding after the vet fees etc hehehehe

What would you do, try again next year?

Try to sell the stud fee?

See if I can at least get some of the stud fee back from the stud owner?

A lot of people have said breed from my other mare but I am not prepared to do that, whats the point in breeding from her for the hell of it!!!

I'd try again in the spring and give it another couple of shots. I doubt you'll get the stud fee back though as the stud will have put time, effort etc into covering your mare so won't be doing it for free, it's not their fault or the stallions your mare didn't get in foal - just one of those things - breeding is a very expensive hobby where nothing ever goes to plan!!!:D

If there is no reason why she shouldn't be in foal then try again next year. We went through this with one of our mares (and we'd bought 2 stud fees as tried 2 different stallions!!) We couldn't get her to hold but the foillowing Spring she caught straightaway!! My friend has just been through something similar with her mare - think it took 4 goes!!!

Make sure you use a good stud vet though, we were told by one vet our mare was infertile, we then swapped to a practice who do nothing but stud work and it made a big difference!!

Who is the stallion? Do they do AI ? You could always ask the question of transfering to another mare, dont ask dont get.

Try to sell the stud fee? You cannot do that unless you chat to the stud it isn't as simple as that.

See if I can at least get some of the stud fee back from the stud owner? Again what were the terms.

You might be lucky to swap mares but again you will have to speak to the stud.

I was able to sell a stud fee to Fleetwater Opposition after my mare lost her blob at about 60 days.

they were really nice about it and fine for my friend to use the return the next year on her mare instead- was very pleased and surprised!

As an aside - what has you vet done to ensure she is ok to breed - has there been an endometrial biopsy? If not, I'd get one as these can be very revealing.
Plus i would say if the results we suggestive of poor fertility studs can often be a lot more understanding regarding transfers or fees. Also it is often not just down to the stud, but the stallion owner too.

I find a lot of studs/stallion owners are exceptionally helpful in these cases - a mare in foal to the stallion is often better for the stats than an empty one with several attempts! ;)

As others have said, check your contract carefully and approach the stud calmly and see what options are available, you may be surprised. Remember though, it is a business for them!:o

Good luck, sorry she didn't take.
