I’m trying to look for a stud for my husbands bitch. he originally kept a number of someone he wanted to use but he’s lost it. She’s four this year and we’ve always planned on having a litter with her. She has a great pedigree all with a working background.
Every time I show my husband a stud he says “no not that one. He’s lovely but he’s a show dog not a working dog”
Any ideas what I should be looking for and where I should be looking for a good working dog stud for my husbands pride and joy? He’s given me the task of looking But little information about what to look for. Thanks in advance

I've no idea where you are in the country but I have a friend with two working GSP dogs, who while not my cup of tea are very impressive. So, if you are anywhere near Essex I can let you know his number!

Seehof Gibb produces nice stock with a very strong hunt/prey drive. Janice Hawkes has a stunning black & white dog, Mikhai? All of Nicky Hamlin's work. The Sanjon kennel usually has one or two good dogs. I could go on.....BUT....it all depends really on what bloodlines your bitch carries and how close a co-efficient you are happy with and what are her strengths and weaknesses, conformation wise and performance wise. What does your husband want to produce? Dog for working or does he trial as well? What type does he prefer? There's a couple of nice dogs in Ireland but they tend to produce smaller, lighter framed dogs that go like stink. If you are thinking of using a dog currently in Scotland, PM me the name as there is one I know of that is used a lot but has an incorrect bite and can be iffy entering water.

Would any local gamekeepers be able to help, or point you in the right direction. Are GSP generally dual purpose or is there a marked split?
Marked split in the UK sadly. There are a few dual purpose dogs out there but generally the pet/show dogs have the hunt drive bred out of them in order to make them more amenable for the environment they are expected to live in.

No such split exists in Germany. :D

You don't mention what he does with the bitch working wise OP.
I am however being nosy SS I don't know ant GSP stud dogs.
Does she have any strengths and weaknesses, conformationally, temperamental or work wise? It may affect your chose if stud.

Hay. She’s a lovely dog, she has a good pedigree with FTCH dogs in it. She’s a traditional solid hardworking all round GSPs who can be trialling/beating/picking up or rough shooting and at the end of the day curl up with the family. She has nice long ears and a long square nose. good conformations and beautiful looking. I’d say her only downfall is that if you leave food on the kitchen work top and leave the room, it tends to disappear lol

by marked split do you mean showing and working? I’m not the most knowledgeable but my husband works Fran and said there is a difference between the show type and the working type x

My husband wants to produce a littler that is in keeping with frans pedigree. Frans dad was a FTCH and it’s something we are struggling to find, seems to be quite rare. He wants to keep one of the pups too and the pup would be joining him on his shoots and my husband enjoys the training aspect of it. Fran will do whatever my husband tells her to, she’ll jump a 4ft gate or swim in a lake if he tells her too. I can’t think of any vices, although she is one of those dogs where you have to change her food extremely slowing because she can get a bit of a bad tummy.

Graygees Gigolo - Dual purpose, has JW and CCs shwing, KC Gundog cert and started trialing last year. Also picks up n a shoot. Lives in a family home.

FTCh Aytee Jumbo Jet of Islasbraw - winner of HPR champs this year. Really smart dog

I would get in touch with the breed club as they will have a field trial secretary who will be able to point you in the right direction. Please take into consideration heath tests as well as working ability. There is no point having a dog with a strong working ethic if the hips are bad and won’t stand up to a full days work

Am I correct in understanding that you will only consider a stud that is a field trial champion? If so, then you are severely limiting your choice; on average there are only 1 or 2 GSPs made up each year, and of course, some of those will be bitches and others will have blood lines that will not complement yours. I suggest you do your research: find out all the names of the field trial champs in the last ten years and look at their pedigrees - you may be amazed to see how few have a field trial champ as either dam or sire. In fact, I can think of one right now that has a show champ as it's sire....Aytee Hot Gossip who was by ShCh Barleyarch Paris. This was not the only one either, but the only one that springs to mind as it is many years since I dabbled in the trialling scene.

If the breeder of your bitch is knowledgeable I suggest you go back to them and get some advice. They may also give you an impartial critique of your dog.....we all think our own dogs are perfect, but none of them truly are. Otherwise, get an experienced mentor to guide you. Also, if your husband is so keen and has the knowledge, let him do the donkey work! :D :D

Lucie (Aytee GSPs) has used show bred dogs several times to produce FTCh - she used Graygees Gigolo over Aytee Katerina recently.

FTCh Aytee Isadora who won the 2015 HPR Champs is out of the aforementioned Hot Gossip by Sh Ch Valanche Brooklyn Dodger

hi I have a working GSP for stud if your interested? It’s free just looking for a pup on return any more info just message me back and I can give you my phone number

How old is your dog please? What breed lines? Assume KC regd? Any health tests? If so, results please? Is he a virgin? If not, how many litters on the ground and ages?

Appreciate that you say you are a gamekeeper, but what do you actually use the boy for? Depending on where you are in the country, I know some that just use them for dogging in, others that use them to work on the moors, others that use them in beating lines (eek!) and god know how many other variants! :D

More info please.
