Stud girth Questions.....

Hi

So last night it was suggest I get a stud girth for Twizzy as she snaps up a lot in front, So just a few questions.

1) Do you measure for a stud girth the same way you do a normal short girth, eg, if i take my current girth to the tack shop will the same size stud girth fit?

2) Were do you attach a 5 piont breatplate between her front legs to the girth?

3) Will it feel wired to Twizzy when she first has it on?

4) Are they REALLY expensive :(.

5) Can you recomend one?

6) Anything else?

Yep short girth length should be fine. I got mine from retford, its a paul jones one, is gorgeous leather and £70 new which is the cheapest I have found a new one of that quality! Give them a ring though as they only had one in, but byron did say he was going to try and order more!
 
As Kat says sizing should be the same. There will be a clip or attachment of some kind at the bottom of the stud girth to attach breastplate/martingale to. Keep a really close eye on this as I have seen soooo many horses going XC with swinging straps where this has got broken/come undone.

I use a Comfort Zone Airflex stud girth - again in the region of £70 ish. Not as posh looking as the leather ones but 100% lighter & more flexible & easier to wash. Echo never noticed when we started using it.
 
Rach - yup that is exactly the one. Mine is actually the long one as I dont have a posh jumping saddle;)

The attachment for the breastplate is kind of double velcro that you thread through the breastplate & then through a ring underneath & back again (clear as mud!!!!) Have a practise before it involves being upside down underneath your horse. I think its probably more secure than a clip & you could replace the velcro in the fullness of time.
 
I couldn't use the short airflex as the largest size is 22" and my horses take a 26 / 28"!

Instead I use a albion / shires, but don't bother now as my grey (in the avatar) has his girth line so far back they are pretty useless. His brother doesn't bother tucking, so not needed! *sigh*
 
I had a Comfort Zone one and found the velcro tab that holds the martingale in place wasn't secure enough and my martingale became unattached after the third fence!
 
my pony takes 120cm (round pony ;) ) i got the John Whitaker stud girth at it looks nice and actually fits, others hit her front leg but the JW one is a more rounded cut that square, i would really recommend it. (around£125) but well worth it :) it has a clip for attachment rather than a buckle or billet (safer)
 
We went XC schooling yesterday and T's pony's Butet one rubbed him really badly behind his elbow :( It's never happened before - any ideas why?? She tacked him up - could she have put saddle a bit too far forward or not tightened girth enough? Anyone experienced anything similar? It is the side of the round bit in front of the girthline which has done the damage... So he'll be wearing an ordinary girth for the next few weeks which is a shame when you look at the damage he's inflicted to the stud one...

TD, I had a beautiful Albion one which L couldn't wear as it rubbed a hole in her elbow :( :( Hers was the fact it sat too far forward on her, and the hard leather guard bit was just in the wrong place to catch her elbow :( In her case it was a combination of the saddle moving too far forward, and pulling the girth with it and the girth being the wrong length.

However, if it has never happened before on Sparky, it is probably just the saddle was an inch too far forward. Has he lost weight/girth gone up a hole at all? L no longer gets rubs now her saddle fits further back and her stud girth is 4" smaller than the albion one!

yup :)

no idea - don't use one - but my stud girth has loops down there so i suppose you'd use that?

3) Will it feel wired to Twizzy when she first has it on?
my horse had a bronking fit - she was SURE i was trying to kill her or something :rolleyes: (this is also the horse who bronked when i tried a girth with elastic one side rather than her usual 2 side :rolleyes: and had a fit the other day as i DARED to attached a set of keys to her d-rings on her saddle... they hung over her numnah but she still knew something was wrong and kept shaking her shoulder and turning round to glare at me until i removed them - so a 'normal' horse might not be as bad lol!)

nope - 2nd hand one ebay ;) both mine (52 & 48) are stephens and 2nd hand off there

O Heck!! :eek::eek: I best hang on then just in case we have a bucking fit to, as Twizzy is far from normal, she thought Carrotts were going to get her this morning.........

Thanks for the advice Kat, thinking about it 1) We do actually have a new saddle which while still a Butet (LUCKY T! 2nd hand obv...) may sit slightly differently and while we've used the stud girth it's only been a couple of times so maybe it won't work with this saddle. Also maybe she sat it a bit far forward... Perhaps I'll get it back to use on MY horses which was the general idea in the first place ;)

And find it very good so far. It sits very flush to the horses underside with no flapping unlike the old stud guards I used to use when SJ years ago! Having seen a couple of pictures of my horses front feet when he is jumping and having to use biggger studs lately in very wet ground I thought it was best to use it! Have had it sitting a while but put off using it because of the flapping versions from years ago. Again from a few times on I do have to say it is showing definite stud marks.
