Just wondering what everyone uses to plug their stud holes and why. For me I mainly use the cotton wool plugs then pack them even more with cotton wool as I find that cotton wool on its own just breaks up and is not much use.

Sometimes use the metal screw in sleepers but find the hole for allen key either gets worn down or small stones in them.

I find with cotton wool that it can break up when you pull it out. I buy a huge pack of cheap sponges and cut them up into lumps about the size of a big sugar lump.

Push them in and blast with WD40. They came out in one piece - you can even re-use them, but are so cheap I just chuck them.

1cm x 1cm cubes of sponge.

squirt WD40 into the hole and then push the sponge in and pack it in with a nail.

works brilliantly, they stay put and you can pull them out with tweezers without it clogging like with cotton wool.

edit to add- haha Kirkton, finally someone else who uses this method!

i don't bother! just let them fill with mud and tiny stones then battle for ages to get the clean when i'm ususally in a rush to get to a comp and stressed....

i'm sooo doing it wrong aren't i?!?! lol

Another one for cotton wool and oil, did buy some cigarette filters, but they were too thin. Might have to try the sponge idea though...

Cotton wool & Copper slip. it "clings" to the thread more than WD40. I dunk the thread of my studs in it too before I screw them in.

I reckonoil of some kind eg WD40 is the most important bit! I use the stud hole plugs and WD 40

OP is your user name your horse's name? My horse's dad was called Vinnie Jones!

umm, that reminds me I did use foam earplugs (chunky ones) at one point as they are pretty much the right size and expand to fit the hole, though perhaps dont stay in as long as they might, good for night before though ;)

As I use mine rarely I find that oiled cotton wool comes out too easily. So I use non oiled, fight it out the day before a comp and replace it with oiled stuff that comes out more easily.

I only have one stud hole in the back, and it has a removable road stud in, so I just remove that and put a more pointy one in for work on grass. :)

This is my tactic also. Tried cigarette filters for a bit last year but found they always fell out or disintegrated before next use.

Think the sponge idea is genius though, will definitely try that! Although I do stud holes the day/night before competition and then put in Supastud travel studs which means I just need to unscrew them once at the comp and swap to whatever I'm using, they're fab. :)

After eventing i just leave them to fill up with mud/stones, but straight after bathing the day before it comes out really easily! Clean, tap and then put flat/travelling studs in(road studs do the trick) overnight so its easy on the day to unscrew, and screw in the actual studs.

I fill them with cotton wool or wet wipes covered in vaseline, put the first lot in before the farrier puts the shoe on. That said the sponge idea sounds good but don't think I would manage to spray WD40 anywhere near my mare, might give it go though :).

I forgot to add I clean them out the day before I use them and refill.

I let them fill up with cack between shows and then clean them out the day before. Used to use the little metal things with the allen key but recently just leave them open. I find that because she's stabled overnight the holes only get poo in them so it's just a very quick clean at the show and whack the studs in. I have packed with cotton wool before but in all honesty find it quicker to do this.
