stud holes

sorry this is probably in the wrong section but it is for competing!!! at the moment my horse has two stud holes in each hoof. the farrier is coming today and i was wondering how many shall i get in each hoof? i am going to definately have two in each back shoe but i dont know how many to put in the front shoes. it is just for doing some PN this autumn?

i always have 2 in every shoe, to keep the foot laterally balanced, but some people prefer one per shoe, to allow the foot to twist a little, as many horses do that... especially with their back feet.

I have always only used one and have been perfectly happy with that for many years!

Studs are the most confusing things ever! You will always get so many different views. Personally I use two in each shoe in front, but only one in each behind. The logic for one behind is that it allows the horse to twist its foot, and also most horses tend to be quite close behind and I get nervous of them studding themselves.

However, some would argue not to use more in front than beind, as it slows down the front end but not the back, so increasing chance of hind legs ripping tendons in front. I dont worry about that too much, however.

I guess having uneven numbers could unbalance the horse, but I only use small ones, esp infront, so I'm not studded myself if I fall. Plus horses should have their own 4 wheel drive!

Personal preference and depends on the horse - mine is a)pretty agile/surefooted, and b)pretty stupid and stands on himself a lot. So I will not have stud hole on the inside of his shoes. I also dislike the biomechanic implications of the potential forces going through the joints higher up with two studs if you may be turning tightly. However, I may revise that in years to come if we slip and I think a second stud could have prevented it.

the amount of people that have had experiences with sliced tendons etc from inside studding
i dont want to take the chance

Another one who just uses one in each shoe.
In fact I only use one in each hind at the moment and none in the fronts but then we are only doing Intros so I will probably revise when we go up to Pre-Novice, although may well end up sticking with the same plan as it's working for me so far.

When I was deciding which way to go I did a lot of investigating and found there were many valid arguments both ways for having one vs two.

So for me it came down to the fact that my mare is very close behind and often scrapes the inside of her other hind foot: decision made!

I use little ones inside hind, and bigger outside, and then one small one infront (road stud type) if is soft ontop. Otherwise none infront.
