Okay, so my boyfriend is currently the owner of a shetland stallion by the Ladbury Shetland stud and we're just wondering what kind of medical requirements the stallion will need to make him, i dont know, safe? to breed from and the prices of such treatments.

There is no evidence of vaccinations in his passport however, theres only two listed owners when we know hes had about 7?

Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated, thank you :)

Sorry but with your obvious lack of experience in breeding you should not stand a stallion.

Have you asked the stud he was bred at?

I would geld as well, firstly you don't sound knowledgeable enough, does his passport not even give his exact breeding and age?!! - standing a stallion is a very expensive hobby not a money making venture, secondly there are far too many shetties out there that can't find homes let alone breeding more - they are so cheap to buy at the moment lots are ending up in rescues or cat food, you'd be wasting your time.

If you are determined to stand him at stud you need to take him to lots of shows and get him winning at something to make mare owners want to use him, otherwise he is worthless.
He will also need blood tests and swabs for sexually transmitted diseases such as EVA, EHV and CEM - ask your vet, they will give you certificates to prove he is negative for all diseases, he will also need vaccinating, cost wise around £150 + vaccinations and call out, you need to do these tests yearly. Mares visiting him will also need all of these tests or you are wasting your time - they are expensive so I would imagine for the amount a mare owner is going to have to spend to get a foal, ie. at LEAST £800, they will want a top notch pedigree proven ie. show record stallion to get a foal of value, or they will not even look at your boy - it is hard enough to get horse mare owners to get these tests done let alone a pony mare, so get him ridden/driven/showing so he can prove himself, and get some judges to give you an idea of his conformation to see if he is even breeding quality and what sort of mares he will suit.

Speak to the breed society, they may also suggest a semen test to check he is firing usable tadpoles - that costs around £180, but to be honest the shettie stallions I know of, even very nice proven ones, are only standing for a £50 stud fee and no-one is using them as you can pick up a youngster for £30 or less at local auctions, and that doesn't even cover your time, shows, insurance, vet bills, teasing and covering a mare etc.

Theres all details filled out other than vaccinations, past owners and medical hisotry which i was worried about. after doing research we discovered that his 3rd sire on his mothers side is actually his 1st sire which we found odd. Hes by two SEVA ponies but bred under Ladbury stud.

Thank you for your advice though (: it was just an idea that came up in a discussion last week as the family are considering selling their other horses but somehow want to make their money back on the miniature stallion so I thought I'd see what I could find out and see if it was a valid option.

Thank You (:
