OK Im starting college in the New Year - I will be doing a 6 month foundation course and then embarking on an NQ Photography for a year, followed by HNC/HND Photography and then finally a year degree level course in......yes, you guessed it Photography :D

I have no clue about finances - I need someone to explain it in little words that I can understand, what I can apply for finance wise.

Background - I have two children, my OH works full time and I will be working part time while I am at college - I currently work full time.

I dont understand bursaries and loans so would welcome any assistance you H&H students can throw my way :D

God, good luck with student finance england. Bunch of crooks.

My advice? Keep ringing. And ringing. And ringing. Don't give up!

What flamehead said! Prepare yourself for weeks of battling their total incompetance!

However,

You can apply for a loan, and a grant. The grant is means tested so you and your partner will have to provide your income and they will calculate what you are entitled to (anywhere from nothing to about £3000 a year), and you do not have to pay the grant back.

The loan is not means tested, and you can have your university tuition fees paid for and also up to around £3000 a year for general living although you do have to pay this back.

You don't have to apply for all of it if you don't need/want that much,

I don't know if it's any different if you are living at home but that is the gist of it!

In Scotland we have a slgithly different system from you english peeps :)

Hevs have a look at the SAAS site they deal with Scottish bursaries and loans. you need to apply with details of your course and time restraints and your family situ and how much you and your partner ear a year as well as any benefits you receive for the kiddies and also you may get the mature student pack through as well.

iv had no problems with mine, they paid on time. i get my tuition fees paid for direct to the uni. i have recieved a mantainance loan and a maintainance grant (the grant i dont have to pay back) i get a bursary as i studied my level 3 college course their and have gone back to do a degree. just ring them and ask what u are entitled to and speak to others in your situation.

advice? apply early.

then ring. and ring. and ring.

because useless dosent cover it. my loan for sept 2009, didnt get in my bank until may 2010. They messed up and i wasnt the only one.

you will be entitled to a maintence loan/fee loan and possibly a grant/partial depending on wages (i think its 26k or under for the full grant..)

you should also get a bursary from your uni too. :)

Thanks guys - its a minefield - I wont be applying until I get to NQ level so will apply as soon as I have been accepted on the course

I asked my local grants office if the form my daughter had to fill in was some sort of intelligence test to see if she was clever enough to go to uni. The lady was very polite and said that if it was, not many would go to uni as most people got it wrong the first time!

Having had a daughter and son go to uni I discovered that the form had misprints and unanswerable questions. Even our accountant was puzzled by some of the information needed and he didn't know what they wanted (which year??). Many frustrating phone calls and letters later it all got there in the end.

My daughter paid her loan off, and was owed some money due to the way it was taken off her salary and she had to wait a year for the balance to be repaid to her.

Fill in the form, submit it and send your evidence in.

then cross your fingers and toes. you'll know the number off by heart soon. Sorry to be a mawk.
Last year, we applied for No 1 daughter's loan in September, and she got it end of January,
This year, we applied in May, sent all the evidence - and she got her money 4 weeks after registering at college. Although the college registered her, SLC didn't note it and needed countless emails from the college to release the money to her.
