my daughter was in london marching with many many more students today against uncapping of fees then the mindless thugs take over a peaceful march - panicked when got her txt telling me what was happening esp as couldnt get through to her on phone but she was safe. But why oh why do the mindless thugs take over i mean throwing fire extingushers of roof on to police below ffs thats attempted murder in my book daughter is so upset that they have given all students a bad name - mindless thugs that prob arnt students just seeing a reason to be violent grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr rant over

My daughter wanted to go, I'm so glad she didn't, I wouldn't have a problem with her going but inlight of what happend I'm glad she didn't go. Looking at some of the pictures I have wondered how many are bonafide students and how many were just mindless thugs out for a punch up !

there were thusands upon thousands of good good students peacefully( though chanting) marching daughter said atmosphere was fun and light but that small minority had to ruin it - daughter is heartbroke - happily she wasnt near when erupted but still was panicking - yet again the minority ruin it for the majority grrrrrrrrrrrr

Its ridiculous, I know plenty of people who were there who all said it was a good atmosphere before a few idiots decided to be stupid! I hate that most news sites are only quoting those who were the extreme badly behaved of the group! I also think that the students involved (who are named alongside there uni) should perhaps be punished in some way by there uni! as that kind of vicious behavior is totally unacceptable!

I am so angry that some thugs decided to turn a peaceful march into a riot. I'm back from London this week so couldn't go to the march but I'm glad I didn't go now. It's so wrong that all students are going to be thought of as trouble makers because of the stupid decisions of the minority- as if the government is going to listen to that kind of protest.

I agree, it's very sad that a peaceful and legitimate protest was taken over by a minority of idiots. I'm glad your daughter is OK, OP, it must have been a very scary experience for her - and for you!

I watched the news earlier and watched the bit with the fire extinguisher and agree that could of killed someone. It is a shame for the students peacefully marching. I hope the police find out who caused all of the problems such as glass being broken fire extinguishers let off etc and send them the bill!!!!!!!!

Sorry but from my point of view they are. I'ts taxes coming from my pension and from a lot of other people that will pay for the damage, and money that could have been better spent else where. I've saved up most of my life, for the things I've wanted and worked hard and never any handouts and paid my way as has my other OH, who bless him worked his way through Uni, so why cann't your kids. Nothing comes free.

I do understand this pay for uni thing! but its bloody hard working and at uni! and for the money the level of teaching hours is shocking!

The thing is many students think they will get a high qualified job at the end of it, but what are they studying, my OH is in Electronics and they cann't get anyone, Media or Arts or the soft options, plenty of takers, but no jobs. I think youngters and their parents are going to have to realalistic, about what sort of career they really want and will they get a decent sort wage and living from it.

I totally agree with this! All of my relatives were shocked when I told them my timetable- uni lecturers must have tens of weeks holidays every year!

My timetable seems to have more than many at 13.5hrs/9.5hrs every other week! but that isnt the norm! know people with 5/6hrs a week for there thousands of pounds!

Gosh how scary for her. I'm glad she's ok.

And for my own opinion, as someone who graduated four years ago, I still think they should be uncapped.

If we are insisting on sending such a huge percentage of young people to university they will have to pay for it themselves.

University is supposed to be meaningful not something everyone does. People doing essential degrees should be funded and those wanting to do media studies, equine studies, film studies etc should have to pay.

If you want to be a doctor fine. If you want to doss off for three years I don't want to pay for it! Especially if your course is so pointless that when you graduate you end up claiming job seekers

*ducks for cover*

I have 8hrs and I'm only in 2 days a week! We worked out that it's something like £36 a day...I can't remember the exact maths.

Don't forget you are also paying for the use of the building, the admin which goes into running your course, your student ents, any consumables you use and many other things.

I had between 20 and 25 hours per week. You should have taken science if you wanted contact time :D

At the risk of ducking for cover with you- I have to agree. There's unis that I haven't even heard of advertising places. I think that uni should be 'elitist' in the sense that those that deserve to go through academic ability should go, not in the sense of 'class.' I also think that more grants should be made available to those who have proved themselves to be good students.

The violence today has really annoyed me, they've probably set our cause back now.

If they dramatically put up fees as proposed, I can't afford to stay at uni unless student loans will cover it. And they're getting taken over soon (or already have been? I don't know) so that may not be an option dependant on what the new private firm decides regarding loan policies. Although saving money now, they're preventing hardworking, intelligent and potentially useful young people from gaining the skills they need, and therefore screwing the country over further down the line when they'll be crying out for teachers etc. and no one will be qualified.

It's a shame as well because many students think like this themselves. Or they certainly did when I was studying. Unfortunately the labour government were so hung up on equal rights they lost the plot IMO.

We are in the fortunate position of having a world renowned education system. I think it is a real shame that it is being made into a mockery with so many joke degrees these days. But I would say that as a know it all scientist. I have a hard time thinking of even traditional degrees like literature as worth the hassle! Hehe

I did languages, I can't remember how many hours a week I did, but I did do a lot of independent study too - this is expected, surely part of getting a degree is developing the self-discipline to get to the library and engage your brain without someone standing over you telling you what to look at?

I agree- by this stage students should have self-discipline. I'm studying history which inevitably gives me loads of reading to do every weeks and loads of essays. I can spend 3hrs every day in the library and that's not including searching articles online at home. Of course using that measurement university hrs increase- but the 'taught hrs' is still low. Nobody (I know anyway) expects to be spoon-fed but 1hr per course isn't a lot I don't think.

I agree that they are going about it wrong. If someone is bright and taking a relevant degree which is necessary to the field they wish to work in, and, that field in turn is relevant to society they should be helped as much as possible.

I don't think anyone who is pro uni will think badly of students because of the actions of a few and those that are anti students anyway will always stay that way so I wouldn't worry.

Spudlet! Have you made a career out of your Uni course and does it pay well.?

I use my degree, although it is not the only aspect of my job - I'm not an interpretor or anything like that. But it was a big part of getting me the job and it comes in very, very handy indeed.

Does it pay well? It's for a charity... but I don't starve so that's enough for me.:D I could earn a lot more doing what I do in the private sector, but I like it where I am!:)

I don't dare post what subject I do now :p although must add it isn't media/film/wine studies :p

Ah go on. I won't say anything :) Even if it isn't a course I would class a degree I would certainly never think less of anyone for taking it if they were interested in it and it was available. The government just need to regulate what classes as a uni and what a degree. But then that's just my grumpy old women's opinion :D
