Student protest in london today

Saw the photos on channel 4 news and am appalled. Nobody has the right to destroy private property and these people have no right to expect people like me who has worked most of my life, from the age of 15 to surport them for several years doing a Universty course, let them go the American way work for it or do a part time course. And the lad who dropped the fire extinguisher could have killed someone and would have been delighed if it had been a policeman

As to the "self-absorbed" comment, the rise in fees will not effect current students, students starting in September 2011, postgraduates or lecturers. I'm thinking the majority of the people in the peaceful protest were one of the above.

I think something drastic needs to happen. If everyone goes to uni then doesn't that just devalue the whole thing? Apprenticeships are the answer to a lot of students in my opinion, textiles, art etc would be better taught on the job and in the workplace rather than unis. *runs into her trench*

I know I'm late to the conversation and haven't managed to read through all of the posts, but ^^^^ this!

I had so many friends who basically drunk their way through uni, and I always thought, "What a waste of everyone's money". Even those who went to red brick unis would call me up and complain about how much work they had to do, and it turned out they had to write one essay in *3 weeks*. I studied English at one of the top unis in the country and had to write at least 3 essays a week, on top of reading, lectures (optional but ended up going to about 15 per week) and individual tutorials. That, I feel, is value for money. It used to really p*** me off that others were squandering pounds on doing basically nothing.

IMO students should be made to pay more depending on what quality university they go to and what grade they end up getting. IE. If they end up getting a 3rd they pay more than someone who has actually put in hard work and got a 2:1 or a 1st. That way we're paying for those who are getting valuable skills and qualifications instead of getting drunk and going clubbing instead of studying.

I'm sorry. I've read this back and it sounds really snobby, but it's how I feel. Rant over. Ducking for cover.
