I've never used them, and freely admit I know nothing about using them.
But I always assumed they were just for XC/ showjumping. Seems I am wrong in my thinking

Do you use studs? How often? For what discipline?
I'm really curious now.

I use a stud in the outside heel of Lad's back shoes when dressaging on grass... if you have a later time the arena is often like an ice rink on the corners after dozens of horses have been in it.
How are you? Has bro-in-law been on yet?

I used studs whenever im doing hard/fast riding on grass or if the grass is slippy/wet
However my horse is also a big fidget that chooses to stand on himself and has injured himself with the studs before which is a problem
My friend events and i tend to be the unpaid groom and usually end up studding up for her.Dressage is a tricky one as you dont want the horse to be 'sticking' in the ground with the studs.
Basic rule is fat square ones for wet and pointy ones for harder ground. NEVER ride/stand your horse on a hard surface with them in as ovb the studs wond sink into the ground and it puts your horses hoof/foot balance all wrong. My farrier has me warned within an inch of my life never to do it.

I do ride at home with out them but i wouldnt like my horse to loose confidence jumping on grass if he was unsure of his footing so would rather take the time to fling a couple of studs in.
They are a pain in the arse at times tho.

I use mine for all 3 stages of eventing, use the same ones behind for all 3 phases, use little ones infront for Dr, but not jumping

Hi Chris, yeah I'm getting better slowly.
Bro-in-law didn't get time at the weekend

I was gutted, but he moves up this weekend, so he'll be riding him very soon I hope! Ellis looking fab, and I really want to get back on so badly, but physio says no
