I'm going to get studs put on my pony next week - but as I've never used them before was wondering as to the right number to put in. They won't be used very often, just when the going is slippy in grass rings at county shows - so what type/shape is best to use?

I was thinking 'one in each corner' so 4 studs in total - I've read though that they should be put on in pairs (to make 8 studs in total) - how important is this?

Would appreciate any thoughts from those who use studs as to what makes/types are best to use and how many people put on!

Thank you!

Ooo ill be watching this one as im not too sure either, i think i had one in each corner last year when i did some dressage on grass. Thinking of doing the same this year unless there is a better way?

I have one in each corner but my friend just has a pair in each hind - there are various arguments for either way and tbh I'm never sure which is 'right'. My instructor says that as the horse slightly twists the hind when moving that it's best to just have one so the foot can swivel round it. My farrier has advised me to have one in each corner so that coupled with my instructors views has made my decision.

I also think it depends on what you are doing and at what height, which will also determine which studs you use. In general small pointy ones for hard ground, and more dome shaped ones if the ground is very wet.

I use SupaStuds but have posted on here recently about how to care for my stud holes & there have been a few thoughts that SupaStuds aren't as good as originally thought. However I am using them with success, especially now I clean the holes out the night before & plug them. I also use a smaller stud in the front than the back, but again that's personal preference
