Last SJ on grass, could'nt screw one the the back studs in, it started to tighten then went loose. Anyway cleaned it out tonight, and used the tap thingi, but that would'nt screw round either???

Thankyou!

Hi

I always keep a few really old studs with rust on and these are great when you have an old thread, if not a very small bit of cotton wool then the stud to hold the grip

It sounds like you have cross threaded it and stripped it. Its knackered, and will likely pull out - you need another shoe.
Its usually down to the farriers punching a hole square, but then winding the tap in 'on the skew' with a tapping bar which distorts the thread and this greatly increases the chances of cross threading them by the riders when you come to screw them in.

The best practice I've seen by a farrier was one of Cecil Swans lads last month on Jessie (Maker of the 'Swan portaforge' they all use in the back of their vans) and he tapped the shoe using a bench vice in the van and a 'brace and bit' and it went in nice and square and makes sticking the studs in very easy.

I am an engineeer (toolmaker) by trade so I take more than a passing interest in this sort of thing.
