studs... stupid questions

thinking of taking horsey to do a bit more xc this year.

But after the horrendus conditions the past few weeks, I'm thinking studs might be a good idea.

But once the farrier has put holes in my shoes, do I have to put blank studs in, or do you just leave them?
 
I roll up a ball of cotton wall, cover it in vaseline and poke it in the hole. Cheaper then the little plug things you can buy and better IMO. Then when you need studs in just use your skewer to get the cotton wool out, then use a stud thread cleaner thing (don't know what it's called..) and insert stud! ETS we tend to put the little flat ones in the day before then change for a larger more suitable stud at the event; saves faffing if you're late!
 
I plug with cotton wool as soon as farrier has finished-either covered in vaseline or WD40 and again when studs are removed after competing. Keeps most small stones and dirt out.
Ask your farrier for a couple of farrier nails when he visits-great for unplugging the holes with.
The night before a comp. I unplug holes, give them a good spray with WD40, tap and put in flat studs which I then remove before fully studding up at the event-these save an absolute tonne of time!
Supastuds aren't bad either-make sure you keep them well cleaned after use and despite what they say, I still have to tap stud hole before stud goes in, but only once and they screw in quickly, usually by hand and then one twist with spanner to hold. Make sure you buy an adjustable spanner as studs different sizes and if they get stuck the adjustable spanner usually sorts the problem out! Supastuds are marginally quicker than a 'normal' stud.
 
You can actually buy plugs to fit the holes from tack shops but a piece of cotton wool works just as well & is cheaper. I've gone over to using Supsstuds as well, they are infinately better than the usual studs, more expensive but really good & easy to fit, You don't normally need to re-tap the hole so don't run the risk of the horse dropping a foot & snapping the tap off inside the hole, as has happened in the past.

i always put cotton wool covered in hoof oil or vaseline straight in once the farrier has done them

then the night before a show i clean them out, tap them, and put a cigarette filter in them (you can buy boxes of these from your local tabaconist)

then when you get there you just pull them out and pop your stud in, as there nice and clean.
