Studs

Hi Guys

I am thinking about have stud holes put in my boy's feet for a bit more grip when I go hunting. Don't really know much about it. Are there different types of studs? Is it as straight forwards as get the holes put in and then buy the studs and screw them in when needed?

Any tips generally or does anyone not recommend them?

Different shapes for different ground...

I just put in what im told...

and yeah pretty straighforward, holes will need to be cleaned though

Thanks for that. Do you tend to put them in before travelling or once you get there?

yep different types! .. depends on conditions!

can be a bit fiddley i find espically if ur in a rush or horse is not behaving! not 2 bad if u clean the holes regularly

if u asj ur farrier he will put them in for you i think mine charges an extra £5 though (as far as i no this seems 2 be the going rate!)

as 4 using them hunting... i never have as u cant predict the ground conditions. the most i would ever use if i felt i really had 2 out hunting would be small road studs but even then i would still worry if i ended up standing on very hard ground 4 a while!

What are they generally used for then? Is it more for eventing?

yep i use mine for eventing... basically i use them for any sort of comp that is on grass ... dont bother when its on a surface i think they can get enough grip from that alone!

we put in road studs (more blunt) when travelling if we are in a rush, but usually try and leave till we arrive, as dont want damage to horse or box

TBH wouldnt use them for hunting personally. The ground is too variarable so you wouldnt be able to stud enough to make a difference in slippy conditions anyway. As above, I use mine just for competing, and have never hunted with them.

Use them very occaisionally for hunting on a horse with soup-plate feet who slips and slides in mud.
Nothing too hefty and you have to be sure you wont be doing any road work

Thanks for your replies. There is generally about 20 mins of road work on each so I guess it would not be very suitable to wear studs. Someone actually recommended me to get them!
