Is it the number of stallions standing or number of mares facilities etc?

A stud does not have to have a stallion, but I would think it would need more then one mare. I am sure that a stud came up in conversation lunch time & they have 3 mares, no stallion, but they are recognised as a stud.

Well I have 3 mares and a stallion (which is obviously a stud!), I rent some stables and grazing (not the greatest of facilities) but I don't really advertise myself as a stud. Do you think I should??
I compete produce horses for other people etc, but never too sure how to advertise myself.

Wikipedia says: "A stud farm or stud in animal husbandry, is an establishment for selective breeding of livestock. The word "stud" comes from the Old English stod meaning "herd of horses, place where horses are kept for breeding"..."
Sounds about right, I'd say... a yard where more than one horse is kept for breeding, I guess!
