Studs??

I wasnt too sure where to post this but here goes,

i have never had stud holes, and i am trying to get my boy out again doing farm rides etc but with the weather im thinking studs might be a good shot, however he only has two front shoes on, can you ask the farrier for stud holes with only two shoes on?

I have never seen this, and none of mine have ever worn studs- with me anyway! so sorry if i sound like a complete idiot.......

It's usually the back hooves that slip - and you couldn't put in studs for wet going and go on a road/gravel track as it really unbalances the hooves.

I have deffo seen horses with front studs in, also i am aware of this, also im aware which rides have all grass or not...

I think what mystiaandsunny meant is that as it is the back feet that usually slip it is of more value to put them in backs than fronts. I probably wouldnt bother as it is usually the backs which slip.. if you decide to, be careful not to put too big a stud in the front feet as you could end up jarring him if you jump something or if he slips at a canter/gallop. If you are planning on doing jump or canter/galloping you will also need a stud guard. A good stud compromise might be "road studs" which you can use on roads/tracks to get more grip but may also help you in the fields a bit too.

I don't mean to come over as rude or unpleasant, but I just can't see why you would need studs in irrespective of whether front or back ones just for farm rides? Ours go all over the New Forest, hunting, racing fast work, slow work, on the roads with no studs at all. Studs went in for jumping at the weekend, he has 2 stud holes one in each hind shoe. That's pretty normal with all the other people I know too. Studs in for showing only if it is a sea of mud in the ring (and there are stud holes in the shoe in the first place)
