Need a bit of inspiration, my horse seems bored with the work/regime he is having with me.

Background is he is my daughters competition horse, left with me as shes gone to Uni, he is a big lad and can be opinionated at times with a buck on him that has had me off a few times.

I have therefore been taking things really cautious with him, having lessons and keeping his excitement levels down (this is when he bucks), but i appear to have turned an 'off' button somewhere as he just seems to be saying meh to me all the time.

He is fine, will pootle along quite happy on a shortish/familiar ride but when i ask him to do more he is saying no, he does this by napping, i spin him in a circle and send him forward (he does not get away with it). Yesterday i took him on a ride where we went on a field with the intention of having a canter, he dropped a shoulder, span and bucked, he did this five times with me, all the time trying to get off the field so he did not have to do the work. He did not get away with it.

So today, i thought we would go 'out' and i took him to Craven Country Ride, 6 mile farm ride with xc jumps, lots of open spaces, thought he would be hyper and he was the complete opposite, was really difficult to get him into canter and keep him there. Was napping to my blooming OH who was on foot, when he realised he was on the way home, he picked up and popped lovely into a canter.

Very, very frustrating, i probably need to get him out with another horse but the problem i have is that the other horse has to be quite sensible or my lad gets too excited and i get nervous. Bit of a vicous circle that i don't know how to get out of.

Had everything checked?

Physio is booked for his 6 monthly check up, will be having his saddle checked too. Yesterday, at first i did wonder if there was something wrong (i am a constant worrier with the horses) but with him being fine when he realised he was on his way back thought he was just being a ******.

Will see what he is like when my daughter next comes home as well as she knows him inside and out.

Think about having blood tests done. A girl I used to work for had a big eventer who just seemed to be lacking his usual spark. Turns out he was suffering from a virus.
