Slowly, over the last couple of weeks I've been socialising our JRT puppy. he's been on the bus, been into town, seen cows, sheep, horses etc, been to yards... he's met LOADS of kids and is being taught to sit on command when he meets people and wants fuss (I dont want him jumping up or running round people). And he's been sooo good.

Today we took him to a country park. In the centre was a child's play area, so once we'd walked through and sat in the middle (with him sitting by my side, learning to NOT chase bikes, getting lots of fuss) we sat on the outside by the lake whilst my children played. A few people came and asked "Can we stroke the puppy?" which i was fine with an explained that if he jumped up they must stop stroking him and wait for him to sit again. They were great with that. Then came people who just marched up, "awwww! puppy!!!" and started fussing him, no asking, nothing, and completely ignored me trying to get him to sit down!

Then this guy, with a great whopping (fat) collie (that had just been for a swim in the lake) walked over and let his collie 'play' with Jack. I was trying to get up, get Jack away from it, and this bloomin dog was climbing OVER me (soaking wet) to get at Jack, it wasnt being nice either! I asked the guy to get it away and he said "It's only playing!!"

seriously, are some people STUPID???? do they see a pup and all sense goes out of the window??

On the flipside i;ve found men seem ten times more attracted to puppies than women, and they're a great pulling tool...

A friend of ours, who our old bitch, for some reason, didn't like, decided, when we got our new puppy, to go in its' run and get his eight year old daughter to take pictures, while we were out.

The pup was a six months old GSD. I gave the bloke a rocket.
He said 'but you said he was a puppy, I wanted to make friends'. The dog, who was admittedly very good (I was proudly shown the pics :S) could have had any sort of temper, could have been really territorial, could have injured him and the child.

Said dog is now taller than me when he stands on his hind legs. I am still really angry about it, it is the stupidest thing I have ever heard of.

We have padlocks now.

Hi I'm new on this post.

We have a 4 year Collie and JRT puppy

And yes they loss their minds! the puppy though brillient is very strong minded which we new but his attitude was picked up at the vets, and they adviced we start as we mean to carry on. ie simply training and displine, but be really stricked

Its not really helped by neighbours who always pick up the puppy up when out, even when your trainning him to come and your calling on him they will pick him up for a kiss and think its cute when he follows them.

And when you mention you don't want the puppy picked up or your trying to do something with him, it goes in one ear and out the other.

But they do this with my horse to, I had him at the front of the house talking to my other half, and the horse was a bit fresh and forward, so whilst he was shuffling around she grabed my rains to make him stand still.

yes, I've had people pick him up too. I'm quite lucky in that he's a nice little chap, often does as he;s told (but has that 'puppy madness'), and I want him to stay that way. I even had one person pick him up, state "yes, he's a good weight... did you know you should do this when he does that blah blah blah..."

Don't get me wrong, I want him to be used to people, used to being picked up and non agressive, but I do worry that if he thinks everyone is going to fuss him it;ll just blow his little mind

I had someone once gran one of the ponies and try and help me box it. I asked them not to and they ignored me and got barged

I know where you're coming from. Even though she's a year old now, Popple still gets "aaaah, look at the puppy" everywhere she goes and then people trying to stop her, beckon her, pat her despite me calling her and it being obvious I'm asking her to keep running along me on the bike.
