Stupid people + horse poo in road....rant

we had a neighbour when I was a kid in cheshire who had moved from London, she came round one day to ask my mum if she was scared by the ghosts in the woods at night as her husband was away and she hadn't been able to sleep through fear
shocked.gif
...........the ghosts were the dairy cows from the farm across the road who were mooing for their newly weaned calves

I`m sure its a story that has made its way all round the country! lol

Although slightly off topic (sorry) I do know of a gamekeeper who watched a hunting lodge guest spend 2 weeks throwing litter all over the estate.
So said gamekeeper got his address, picked up all his litter and dumped it in the guest`s front garden!

Little note throw the door saying something like " here is the litter back that you dropped in my front yard...)

Well done him!

See, with dog poo (and I always pick up after my dogs) once you put it in a bag it takes a heck of a lot longer to decompose. I wish they would invent a better way of dealing with dog poo. As for Horse poo, if left it vanishes quite quickly really. Gone are the days when people used to fight over it for their plants.

There are some strange people on this planet. Don't worry about it, you've done nothing wrong. If thats all that person can do, is to stand there waiting for a horse to poo, they have got a very sad life. Just ignore them.

I can actually understand that people may get pretty annoyed when our horses crap right outside their houses - right by their exit. And I really try to prevent it from happening when riding throught the village.

How? Do you ban him from doing it or catch it in your hat?

Yeah, obviously

Sod em. There are no requirements to clear it up. One woman got arsey with me once saying it was a health hazard. I replied, only if she ate a lot of it

and rode on.

Stupid nanny nation.

My granddad used to send my dad out (when he was a boy) to follow the rag and bone man with a shovel so he could have manure for his prize winning chrysathamums.

QR FFS how the hell can you control where and how much a horse defecates on the road or otherwise. They are not dogs being taken for a walk in order to relieve themselves. When will 'non-horsey' folk realise this? Even dogs can make 'mistakes' and if are really desperate to relieve themselves will do so on pavements and so on, on route to their normal 'crapping' grounds.
Horses are different. They don't stoop to poo like dogs do. They usually stop ( well mine do) but as we cannot see their behinds as we ride how do we always know if they are stopping to nap, to crap or urinate? It is not until you hear the plop or the occasional grunt and groan from a horse that you realise the horse has crapped on the floor.
FWIW I try to avoid driveways and paths and never ride on such unless some impatient or stupid car driver forces me into a situation of either get out of the road or we will start nudging your horse's backside or papping a horn.
Needless to say if I do ever go onto a pavement or driveway it is to 'park' the horse while impatient people go past or else on the occasion a large vehicle wants to pass and there are cars opposite. I don't have to move out of their way but do so for the latter reason as courtesy and also to prevent having a lorry or bus revving up behind you as it can frighten even the most sanest of horses at times.
I really don't think we have any duty at all to pick up horse poo but I do abide seeing it on pavements which I have from time to time as there is no reason to mount a pavement except for reasons stated above and not for it to be used as a road. I say this as I have seen it on pavements near to where I live and it is obvious the horse is being ridden down as the poo is in dots not a static place.
Problem being that we have a few anti horse people where we live. Or ones that don't necessarily appreciate horses and their riders when they do things such as that. As some of these people have quite a lot of say at a local level and most probably still have connections with the council then it is up to us horseriders to tread carefully I think.
But as for horse poo on roads then I don't have an issue with it all. If someone's horse came and crapped outside my house, so what. I ride, I have horses myself. My horse's crap on roads so what if someone else's craps outside my house as mine have probably done the same on some main roads that have terraced houses along it.
We cannot control how often and where our horse's poo and this is something that people really need to understand. The only exception being pavements and pathways where we should show respect as people walk along them and they were not designed for us riders!
Rant over!

My horse has crapped right outside my house, I left it there same as I would anywhere else, keeps the other rubbish left by chavs company, I try to get him to do it in the middle of the road if possible depending on traffic if I feel he is going to do one, rather than in front of someones drive.

At my last yard they built a MASSIVE housing estate right up to the lane, the builders made everything as difficult as possible for existing users of the lane and for the 3 yards and farmer, needless to say when the dopey bastards moved in some complained about the horse poo, one twat even went round all the stables in the area in his soft top lime green saab converable to complain after I told him I would ride where I liked and we were there before him so basically sod off, he got a shock as he came up behind us and must have thought it was a couple of young girls, then I turns round and it's a nasty little guy with a chip on both shoulders and not some kid, I made a point of riding past his house every ride for a month, his lordship obliged by dropping one out right outside his house, he got an extra carrot.

When we had a big yard a number of years ago.

We once got a complaint amout horse poo on the bridleway!?

There's a hint in the name!...

I'm probably going to get shot down in flames for my post, as i was just looking up the law about horse poop on the roads, but from reading on here, it appears legally nothing can be done about it.

I am a long distance motorbike rider commuting for my job, and this morning i came round a bend to see a giant horse poop on the road, luckily i was going slow enough to avoid it, but i wasn't ready for the second horse poop half a meter in front of the first one just to the right of it, and as i was turning away from the first one, my front tyre hit it and my bike went down straight away, luckily i wasn't going particularly fast (i'm not a fast rider) so didn't slide very far, but had i been going a little faster i would have been sliding into the oncoming traffic.

So whilst it might not be a health hazard, and horse riders dont mind it being spread all over the road, it does present a hazard to some road users.

I used to be a rider and shared a horse with my sister when i was younger (and richer!) so i can see it from both sides, and always slow down for horses and give them a wide berth when overtaking, but i do think that horse riders could do more to avoid horse poop being spread all over the roads

What do you suggest?

That we carry a spade and brush with us and train them to clear up after themselves?

I guess in all fairness people who are not horsey will not see it as being any different to a dog owner's responsibility for clearing up after their dog. I know that we know differently, but glass tapping person presumably did not.

I can also see it from both sides, but again I sort of think that they need to see theres not a hell of a lot that can be done about it in some circumstances. I barely ride around houses etc to avoid it but if it does happen I try to halt so that it doesnt get spread in some big line across their drive/ road or whatever.

I once rode up to my friends grandparents house to stop and stay hi with her, and Darcy pood RIGHT on their drive. I nearly died and was literally getting off to clear it up knowing that they would have a shovel nearby and there was a muck-heap for the nearby allotments nearby I could've easily walked it too, but they werent having any of it and were quite happy to do it themselves, thank god

I'm not sure what or even if there is an answer, I was looking to see if there was a legal responsibility in the event of a crash resulting from horse poop on the road, but it seems that riders are not responsible for their animals when they take them on the roads.

It seems strange how the law works sometimes, but thats how it is i guess !

sorry to have tapped your glass !
