Ambiguous title but on the subject of stupid people breeding cheap ponies and selling them, I am SO angry at some of the idiocy apparent on FB sites.
I know it's been mentioned before, but surely there is something that can be done. People are selling ponies for £50 for goodness sake.
There are adverts for ponies backed and working, well before they should be, colts/ stallions/ broodmares, horses with no passports, those who are unbroken but advert states 'will make a great child's pony' (- how on earth do you know?), tethered horses for a few quid who are really loved and looked after and don't mind being on a tether, (really? did the pony tell you it likes to spend its days going in 5 metre circles).
Why won't people stop breeding cheap ponies that go for less than the price of a good meal?
I thought we were progressing as a society - this is just backwards. What can I do?
Perhaps I'll set up a Face book page entitled 'Stop stupid people breeding'.

Well said. In latest BHS magazine, they have an article pleading with people to NOT breed. But people still are. I wish there was something that we could do.

The first thing that could and should be done is that EVERY entire male over the age of, say, 2 must be licensed. It would also have to be policed but imo well worth the expense to stop ll these numpties buying colts and 'forgetting' to geld them or thinking that 'they move beautifully' and deliberately leaving them entire, without the proper facilities or knowledge.

I would love to see the licensing brought in. For breeding & for ownership! Oh in an ideal world! Mind you, in an ideal world, there wouldn't be such selfish people, like those numpty owners who don't bother gelding their colts because either they don't want to spend the money or they're too lazy! I'm replying to Facebook adverts that annoy me, which will probably get me banned or abused.

To be honest I think it has always been going on, social/internet media has just helped highlight the problem.

Vets! Lower their bloody costs and more people would get castration done amongst other things.

I thought about a system similar to DVLA for horses but not sure how it would be policed.......

I also wish some people wouldn't breed themselves.

I think it was on this forum...someone was asking whether they should geld their low-quality stallion before they sell it...no, let it go off and breed low-quality foals. After all, if you don't want them, you can just dump them on the roadside, right? :(

Licencing could work...but would it just end up with all the honest people buying into the scheme, and those who don't want to (who are more likely to breed irresponsibly) not bothering to.

It makes me really angry that people can be that thick and short sighted.

Agreed!!! If the vets lowered their costs then perhaps more people would pay to have there horses gelded!

I saw a program before and I think it was about the travellers ponies and the the authorites or a charity (cant remember) went round and gelded a load of them and wormed them all, and didnt charge the, either, which I thought was a good idea :)

I think your thread title says it all really - Stupid people. Still breeding. It's the stupid people that are the problem. Perhaps make vasectomys compulsory for people with a low IQ?

We could bring out whatever laws we wanted to about owning and breeding horses, but the types that are at blame for over breeding would be the only ones who would not bother to stay within the law, therefor it would be just another cost and load of hassle for responsible owners and breeders.
I have just bought a cob mare who had a foal taken off her a week before I bought her, she had a foal last year too. The owners sold her to me as empty this year, I will be however have her checked anyway just incase of a surprise foal. This years foal was given away, so what was the point of breeding her, its so sad.

I was trawling through Preloved and Dragon Driving earlier today and there are so many foals for sale. Most seem to have rather unfortunate breeding poor things. Lots of mares with foals on foot too and for very little money :( if only there was some way to control it but sadly those chiefly responsible probably wont observe any regulations put in place.

Dragon driving seems to be the worst place to find these ponies, so sad :(

Brilliant, might help our benefit society too, that!

Which benefits do you mean?

Those for sick/disabled people?
Those for carers?
Those for the elderly?
Those for parents?
Those for unemployed people?

Because of course, "people with a low IQ" are the only ones ever in need of such things! Do please enlighten us all as to how the intelligent people avoid ever needing to claim benefits

I do hope none of you are ever ill/disabled/a carer/a parent/unemployed/elderly. Myself, well everyday that I wake up is a victory. I have a condition that can kill me: my brain malfunctions whilst I am asleep. So yes, I receive benefits for this. I do apologise for my "low IQ".

Its not just dogs, people are still breeding puppies theyc ant sell, and there was an item on the local news yesterday that 30 starving kittens had been found dumped in a wood.

I completely agree.

Eugenics has some pretty major downsides as anyone who recognises the name Josef Mengele will know.

And female sterilisation for low IQ females who spread their legs to get housed by the council and then turn it into a career 4 kids sired by 4 different low IQ males
I have always maintained If You Cannot Feed them dont Breed them.

With regard to Low quality Horses Look who breed most of them the Thieving comunity and people on the periphery of that community these people just dont care less about anybody or anything.

You dont need to have a low IQ to make the decisions that lead to being on benefits. My friend is highly intellient, but her qualifications are scattered and low because she spent her school years under sectioning for severe mental problems inflicted by a horrifying childhood. Now she finds it hard to get a job that pays enough to privately rent, no family to fall back on, so shes on housing benefit and some kind of income support. People sneer at her, call her a scrounger because shes 'sitting at home spending the taxpayers money' but no, shes working every single hour she can, trying to break away from the council housing and saving for private renting, it will take years.

Im a carer for vulnerable adults with varying learning disabilities and have, in the past, heard someone say about my client 'i bet shes putting it on for the govenment goodies'.
I had to hold back from slapping her because honestly, who asks to have limited understanding of the world, to be under constant observation and not understand why.

Please don't make such sweeping statements.

Yes Hairy Old Cob!

I'm going against common opinion and going to say that most of the people who are breeding poor quality foals aren't low IQ at all. You just need to look at Dragon Driving to see that these people have enough brains to know exactly what they need to do to get someone to buy their underweight, lice infested, wormy, scrawny little inbred colt, the people with the low IQ are the ones who buy the foals and perpetuate the cycle!

Completely agree about the low IQ comments. Think before you type. I have a friend who's not exactly endowed with a high IQ, but she's the best parent I know. On the flipside, I have two degrees, am working through a PhD and couldn't open a stairgate...

Stupidity isn't about having a low IQ. It's about knowing the right thing to do and doing the wrong thing anyway.

Wow, this thread has a really nasty edge to it. :(

And there is no one more stupid than someone who makes crass generalisations anout people on benefits in my eyes

Thank you. Nicely said. It's so easy to dismiss those who are overbreeding as lacking in intelligence and it does nothing to explain what's going on. Why not just agree that they are unscrupulous ..someone somewhere must be buying their produce or they wouldn't keep on doing it. Any why extend the vitriol towards those in benefits? We all know there are those who take advantage of the benefit system but these are usually the crafty ones. The vulnerable ( that's another word for people with learning difficulties or who physically or emotional disadvantaged) are often the very ones who miss out on their just entitlement.

FS, JT and TM - I'm so glad that others can see the really nasty insinuations of some of the posts here.

Oddly F people breeding and selling on faceache don't upset me half as much as the sort of comments we have had here  and I see them all the time on there. I have become quite militant over my 'friends'. Anything like this and I instantly unfriend these days.

Blimey, totally distracted from the issue I was trying to raise. Thank you for the relevant and constructive comments. I would like to clarify that I was making a point that people are stupid and irresponsible for breeding ponies in this climate. It wasn't a reference to IQ or ethnicity, simply my opinion of their actions. My concern is for the welfare of unwanted ponies. I have to say, I feel quite dismayed by the attitude I've met on FB when I've challenged people about breeding or riding horses too young. On one particular site, they have called me 'bitchy' for expressing concerns and threatened to bar me for being bitchy. How is it bitchy to point out that backing a horse too young is bad for its welfare in the long term? How do you get through to ignorant people? There must be a way to reason with idiots?
