Hi all, really want to put a neckstrap on my boy to help with my stupid jumping nerves. I never seem to be comfy grabbing mane, and his breastplate is too far back.

Have looked on eBay but can't seem to find a neckstrap - I have seen people with them and they are nice neatly tucked away leather bits...as a kid I used a stirrup leather (I think!) but just thinking physics for a mo, I'm wondering...could a stirrup leather come undone?? Also it will look untidy...

Mind gone blank here, help me out please...thanks!

it may look abit untidy but they do work as neckstraps and hadn't herd anyone say they had come undone but i don't use them myself but they use them at the riding school i work at!!!!!

Stirrup leather is perfect as a neck strap. If you wanted to smarten it up, you could ask a saddler to make a 'keeper' for the loose end of it, so it's not hanging down

I am a proud use of a stirrup leather neckstrap!! It matches my tack and has never come undone. My friend has taken apart a martingale and use the neck bit as a neck strap for comps as its thinner and looks a bit smarter!

I've never seen anything for sale as a "neck strap" - I have always used old stirrup leathers! I tuck the loose end away back through the buckle, which also helps to keep the thing done up. If by some chance the leather does come undone, it's no big deal as it will just fall off and as it's straight there's nothing for the horse to get tangled in anyway! I've never had one come off though even out galloping and we use them a lot where I work.

A stirrup leather makes a perfect neckstrap, and well done you for not being too proud to use one.I wish more people would make more use of them they are a great bit of kit for any rider.I teach alot at pony club in the summer and often bring one along with me,just incase it is needed.(which it quite often is !!)And i always use one when riding a young horse or any horse that sets itself against the rider its amazing how you can steady a strong horse by pulling on the neckstrap and not its mouth!

Stirrup leather for sure!! My OH uses one, has it on as well as the breastplate, as like you say, the breastplate is too far back to grab.

William F-P often uses a neck strap as breastplates/girths are no good for grabbing.

I use the neck strap off a martingale & it is narrower to hold on to, you can just slip a finger underneath without anyone really noticing.

Dressage folk like to use a strap over the front of the saddle, from D ring to D ring but I prefer to have slightly shorter reins & have my hands a bit further up the neck!!!!

I have my pony in a martingale mainly so i can grab onto the neckstrap when i need it!

Also as others have said i find it can help with stopping, especially on a young horse.

Wouldnt hunt without it!
I tucked the loose end back through the buckle and then secured it with black bandage tape. It has also been used as an emergency spare when someone's stirrup leather snapped

Hunting for the first time next week (for both of us) so it will get some serious use...may need to back it up with another 2...
