stupid question but....

I am doing a paper review at the moment and am i right in thinking it is mandatory for all foals born in the EU have to be microchipped?
If so when did this come into force?
Please feel free to tell me this is some crazy twaddle i have dreamt up

Not a stupid question. You are corect microchipping any horse, not just foals, who require a passport is compulsory.

I think it wa 2009 it came into force but i may be wrong, someone may be able to be more exact

all equine foals born after July 2009 have to be microchipped under European-wide regulations, whereas microchipping has been compulsory for foals in the Thoroughbred breeding industry since 1999.
