Really stupid question but I'm tired so that's my excuse!

Will louse powder still work if horse has a turnout on?

Thank you.

I would think so just make sure you work it right into the areas rather than it sitting on top of the hair and end up on the turnout.
This. If it’s the old fashioned louse powder I’m thinking of ( a shaker can of power), back comb the horse’s coat with a dandy brush if they’ll let you and then dust so it gets right through the coat.

Thank you. It is the old fashioned powder. I applied it and she shook so it all sort of spread out so it looked like a good dusting all over! She had her rug back on about half an hour later. Hopefully it went into the coat but I might backcomb and do it again to be sure.

I don't know just make sure you keep everything clean.

We clip our rescues before treating them. It makes it a lot easier.

Mites and lice are different and are treated differently. Are you sure it's lice can you see them.

I don't know if it's either but horse is itchy so I did it as a precaution in case it's not just because she's shedding her coat.

OK you can usually see lice they move about the coat. They can also pass lice onto others.

Where is she itching?

Her back and sides mainly. I've put the powder on my other as well. They live together with no other horses in with them. I can't see any on either of them. It was a precaution but I wasn't sure if it was pointless if she was wearing a rug.

Lice are blood feeders, and hook into the skin. They can be cleared with flea/louse shampoo or powder, or by ivermectin wormer, as it gets into the blood stream.
Mites are not blood feeders, and live on dead skin, burrowing under the scabs that form from the irritation. A shampoo containing selenium 2,5% will clear the skin debris and take the live mites with it. It needs to be repeated at day five and day ten to clear any hatchlings.
Mites are harder to clear as dead skin cells can lurk around in the stable, on rugs, bandages, brushes etc. so a good spring clean is essential.
