Just got a new saddle in brown therfore need new stirrup leathers. How do i know what length i need as never quite sure and normaly guess!? am 5ft 11 also is it a bad idea to put leathers on a synthetic saddle? as i find some synthetic "leathers" cheap and nasty.

Any advice greatly recieved

P.S should be shoot not shot!!

Hi there,
I bought a synthestic saddle recently and was advised not to use leather as the synthetic material would rub, so I bought synthetic to match. Part of me wishes I had bought leather 'leathers' becuase the synthetic ones arent as easy to soften are are still very stiff. In terms of size, I'm 5ft 3 and was told that unless buying child sizes adult leathers are standard size. That said I'm sure you can get specific sizes depending on brand. A good saddler should be able to advise you.

Stirrup leather come in 3 sizes usually. 48", 54." and 60". The 54" are your standard size.
I'm 5'8, ride fairly long and need 54". The 60" are too long even on the shortest hole! 48 are kids size.

Leather stirrups straps on synthrtic are fine. You might find they squeak but they rub no more than synthetic strirruo straps.

Agree with Kallibear here i think 64" seem very long! the pair i have now are on the top hole and thats ok for flat work but rubbish for jumping!!

I'm 5'2 and ride a fairly normal length, I use 54" leathers which are on hole 9 of 12 so I've got room to go up or down if needed. Hope that helps

I use the webbing ones on my synthetic, I rode in leather ones once and could see wear marks.
Ive got 48" webbing ones on mine im short and its a jump saddle!
