would one have a horse vetted if they were to take it on loan? Particularly if it was to be a low level all rounder/competition horse? What about a horse that you might affiliate?

thanks

vetting is usually only for purchase so you can get it insured (because without x rays etc the horse could have nevicular and loads of other problems so vetting i only see as having a point if you are a novice owner and cant tell if there is something wrong and of course for the all important insurance!). If its just a loan then there isnt much point because if it goes lame you can always send it back? And just keep paying the insurance the owner already had in place for it?

I dont know this as i have never put anything out on full loan just part but i have never heard of anyone having a loan horse vetted!

You could always go for a 2 stage vetting, to get a fair idea if the horse will be fit for your requirements. Doing this may give you peace of mind. I would most definately have a good level of insurance in place.

Cool - thanks - never took a horse on loan or loaned one out in this country - so haven't a clue what the done thing is. Just wondering mainly.

i would if you would ever consider buying it..

i say this as i had my boy on full loan, fell head over heals in love (as you do) and offered to buy him after a few months. THEN had the vetting and he failed badly, but was so in love with him by then i brought him anyway. don't regret a second of it but wonder if i'd of let my heart rule my head if i'd vetted him at the start.
