.....but I was lucky and got away with it.
Actually, my horse is amazing, and I really need some sense knocked into me.
Was in the arena earlier, schooling very nicely. Jumps were up, so using them as 'props' to bend around, changing direction, transitions and such like.
Was so good, I thought I'd reward Meg with a jump or 3. One particular jump had those plastic blue barrells under, only they weren't under, they had blown about a stride away on landing side, due to not being 'poled' in place.
And, as I am a fat lazy watsit, I didn't feel the need to dismount to move them. So, I bent down and picked them up, which on a 15hander isn't impossible. Now, I urge others not to do the same, as clearly I need my head seeing to. I managed to hold onto the rim of the barrells, one at a time, and walk Meg, carrying the things out of harms way from the jump. I probably looked like I was trying to train the poor mare to be the next calvalry drum horse.
Meg was ace, and didn't flinch. I like to think we have such a good partnership that she understands and trusts me, but as we all know, horses are not machines. I wouldn't dream of doing it on anything other than my mare. Thinking about it, I doubt i'd do it again.
We went on to jump all the jumps with such enthusiasm, that I honestly couldn't ride for the huge cheshire cat grin I had, and was merely a passenger. We jumped several combinations of upto about 3'3'', making it feel like a mini x pole. I am truely blessed.

I have to post this thread in my pure big headedness, that I own a remarkable mare, and I love her to pieces.

Thank the lord I'm not the only one!!!!!

Mine weren't barrels though....I had two jump wings in either arm and no reins. LOL. It did work....but my god did my arms ache!!!!

hehe, made me smile. 'Elf and 'afety would have a field day with the likes of us about!!

Ooooh yes! Especially when sometimes getting the herd of colts in, by me riding the one older horse bareback in a headcollar, and running them all back to the stables trotting them down loose behind him following him!

Oh and 'apple hacking'! Found a huge apple orchard, so used to take a few bags, fill them with apples and tie them to the saddle and breastplate to take back home! :)

Sort of thing I'd do and not think twice about it. Not the big jumps though as I am a coward!

I've moved road cones before on my
old boy!

One of our local bridle paths comes
out on a country lane which had been
closed for road works. The works were in
The opposite direction and we only had a
Couple of metres to walk down and there was
A big row of cones, so I just picked them up for
Us to pass and then put them back! :)

I have brought bins up on the ponies before...Special bit of baler twine for ease of dragging along with!

I agree ... the big jumps were a stupid thing to do :p

I regularly ride one pony bareback, in a headcollar, then lead 4  (2 on either side). Pah to 'Elf and Safety.

To be fair, my attempt at trying to close a gate on horseback, sounds far more dangerous than moving barrels ;)

Not remotely stupid, it's the sort of thing I do all the time - barrels, water drums, fillers, poles - if I can reach it off the horse, why would I get off?

Actually, if I do it routinely, it MUST be daft! Don't do it again :p
