Stupid Yard Rules

'All skip buckets and wheelbarrows must be thoroughly washed out after use'

Not a rule, but I was on a yard a few years ago when the YO asked if I could stop my mare from peeing on the yard (I always washed it down afterwards BTW)

I didnt have a clue what to say as my mare would just pee when she liked (as you do!!!) at now particular time/pattern - just pee - so I just said I would have a quiet word with her

I did think this was quite silly for him to say this, but each to their own!

Urmmmm, at one yard it was more the volume of requests that got me;

Don't let your horse roll in school, pick up all droppings (although they were someone elses), Don't use any hay other than the manky old stuff off the floor (wooden pallet and all) that we stuff into it, we give your horse 2cms of straw bed do not use anymore, don't ever use the floodlights for the school as too expensive, buy copious quantities of feed so we can feed ours with it, when leaving yard please leave your weavegrill and matting for free as taking it will 'destroy' the property, don't tie your horse here there and here in case it ever eats the wood (which he doesn't), don't ever ask for YO to come out in evening and remove bandage from horse's leg or provide bucket of water, please pay YO vet and farrier bills to be reimbursed as they have no money to pay, etc, etc and all at a bargain of £80 per week (3 yrs ago) for FULL LIVERY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ha ha!

I wonder if I have, what might be deemed as, the most stupid rule?

I don't have many rules on my farm, but one is not to throw any balls/sticks/etc for my Springer Spaniel.

I don't call that strange, I would expect it, it is just being clean as well as hygenic

Are you being serious?
I have worked on a fair few smart yards and none of them did this!!! What a waste of time, energy and water!

Hmm...

Can't lunge or do 20 mtr circles in the school as it has to look neat and flat at all times. You have to pay £x to use it, even if its just for 10 mins and then you must hand rake the entire school...
Horses in 24/7, but you can't walk them round on the concrete as it will ruin it...
YO takes me to my hay, which was on a pallet and asked 'what the hecks that'....to which I replied um....hay? And was then told she meant the hay which had fallen through the pallet and underneath....I had to clean it all up from underneath said pallet...even tho hay bale was one of those massive round ones and I couldn't move it to get underneath the pallet!
In morning turnout, when in a rush, would brush any muck/mess that had come out of stable, back in, until I could muck out later. Was told that my house must be a state cos I obviously brush all the muck under the rugs! Not said in jest!

I could go on, but needless to say, only managed about 8 months there....

I would clean them out if they stank and were being stored close to the horses/where people have access, especially in summer months - it would help cut down on flies. Woulnt really bother with this practice in the winter though unless they were really stinky/dirty.

No restricting grazing with electric fences because it spoils the look of the field

Only allowed to use the Olympic sized school one day a week, everyone had their allocated day. Still had to pay to use it though... (thankfully this didn't come in until after I left)

People weren't expected to shut gates behind them, apparently it was my horse's fault because she knew how to push gates open

Being asked to move because your horse eats the hedge

Being asked to move because your horse runs about too much and it spoils the look of the field

Well they never used to, but when I told them why I didn't want them throwing for the Springer (because my old collie knew we didn't like it, and always used to chastise the Springer and then the Springer used to attack the old collie). The moment they saw her doing this to the old girl, they stopped.

What I can't understand is, you don't have to shout at Lily, you just quietly say "no more, go away" and she quite happily wanders off and plays with the ball herself. I did used to get a bit miffed with people doing it after I'd asked them not to about 300 times

Not a livery rule, but I used to work for someone who made me take a dustpan and brush to the edges of the stables!!!

Not one speck of dirt, dust or hay was allowed on the yard. She had the wheelbarrows and shovels washed every day too. At least she paid me, though!!

Ermmmmmm OCD warning.........

Use only the (literally 15" deep) muddy side of the track down to the fields. Anyone caught walking their horse on the non-poached side will be severely reprimanded - we need to save the track for Spring !

Funnily, by Spring, all the liveries had gone, so there was no need to "save the tracks" for it!

Jeez, this is all making me love my yard!!!

There are only a few rules, all pretty simple and I'm glad they're there. Pick up poo from school, max of 3 horses in the school (as there's only 3 liveries this is hardly an issue!), no smoking ermm that's it.

Oh at my old yard we weren't allowed there after 6 in winter - the YO would wait for you and come running out shouting if you were there at a minute past 6!

Err yes ... apart from the fact it doesn't look nice everything covered in [****], washing the tools actually protects them from the damage the urine and manure do to the tools

I rinse poo buckets out with the left over water from their buckets after I have rinsed out their feed bowls with it....... and then tip them into the wheelbarrow for a swill round. No need to use freah water.

Exactly, one thing I can't stand is [****] covered tools

We are SOOOO lucky with our yard - YO bought a humungous static caravan that the liveries use for socialising, getting warm in, relaxing in, having tea and coffee in, changing clothes in. Even for sleeping in if we have a yard bash with alcohol! It has a separate toilet and a kitchen with kettle and fridge and masses of seating and HEATING. Yard rescue cat kips in it during the day. We all help keep it clean and tidy. But can you believe today when I went to empty the kitchen swing bin that there was a dirty nappy in there!!! New rule needed: please take your dirty nappies home with you. Yurk!
