Hi all,

Lame fashion post so hope you will forgive me!

I am at last upgrading my black dublin jacket as we are competing quite alot (and not shaming ourselves!) so it is about time we got our appearence sorted - helped along by pics on here from comp reports. It is all very nice turning up and competing well, though I would like to look better while we are at it!

I am ordering a tweed from Alexander James (for showing in small hunter and working hunter) and a blue wool Epsom jacket from Pikeur for the dressage.

But, do I go for a navy velvet collar on them? Either, both or neither?
Thoughts?

choc cookies for bothering to read my airy fairy post and helping!

for both?
Have been having a good stare after we have done our dressage tests and velvet collars seem quite common, but can't decide how much I like them, or if I like them because they are what I am used to seeing!
Since they are a 'buy well once' type purchase I'd just like to get it right! Admittidly it isn't earth shattering stuff, but there we are!

It is more correct to have a self fabric collar for showing....however, saying that, you do see an awful lot of velvet collars and I've yet to see anyone penalised for it!

I do like to see an inlaid velvet collar that matches the hat I must say!

Velvet collars aren't correct for hunting, but fine for everything else, so unless you hunt (and want to be turned out properly, thought I'd add that before there are loads of posts from folks saying 'well I hunt with a velvet collar and nobody's ever complained' ;) ) then it''s down to you own personal taste.

Personally I would say nay.

ETA I'm thinking about ordering a hacking jacket from AJ, but connot make up my mind on which tweed to have.

Thank you for the help guys!

Although I realise it isn't essential and you can get along just fine being nearly there, I am a little ocd about being 'correct' so your advice is really helpful!

I have seen some inlaid collars and I did like the idea (just linking in my velvet hat with other clothing!), but although I'm not built like a brick s**t house, I'm not v petite in my shoulders either and the inlaid collars did seem to add width which wasn't a great look on me!

Both jackets without velvet then, thank you!!

P.S. Marmalade 76 - I have had a hell of a job finding just the right tweed (urm, did I mention I was fussy!). I looked at all the ones they had a Olympia and none were just right - too light/too dark/wrong colour overlay/too thick etc! I just wanted a fairly standard green tweed with overlay in a blue shade that wasn't totally bling, also didn't want it to be in a heavier tweed. I found alot of the tweeds with a nice green, then tended to have orangy or red shade overcheck - colours that just don't suit me so I would have found it hard to link my shirt and tie in and not look ill and a mess! I have at last found what I hope is the right one as they sent out a load of swatches that they thought would fit what I was after. I am having Porter and Harding "Glorious Twelfth" in 25310 - it is a light fine tweed in a lighter but not light (iyswim!) green with a very fine overlay in pale blue, a sort of dark sky blue, dark grey and dark brown. I am about to send the sample book back to them (they only had the one which they very kindly sent out to me) so if it sounds like your thing you'll have to hassle them for it! Alot of lovely lightweight tweeds in it, but if you are after something heavier then I don't think it will help too much. Did you find their sizes on the flattering size? I am a uk38 in pikeur, but for the Alexander James I need an 8 - I haven't been an 8 for decades!!!
