I'm a bit of a newbie 1) to the forum and 2) to hunting, so be gentle!

After cutting short our eventing career due to lack of time with a new job in central London, and then being bored RIGID all season this year, I have decided GG and I needed a new hobby. Friend with youngster wanted to get out hunting, so, galvanised we went to the SU opening meet. GG is allround very good, and so we had a lovely day. I drove myself in the lorry, all was straightforward and fine... SO, despite GG's friend having thrown a splint, I am still planning to attend this Saturday's Surrey Union meet, but all by myself.

Will anyone from here be there? If so, please do say 'hi'! I'll be the one in the ratcatcher on 17hh fleabitten grey in a gag and grakle. Looking nervous (!). If all goes to plan I want to get a 10-day sub (full time employment means Saturday-only hunting for me)

Also, quickie question:

How long is the hunt likely to last? And how hard would it be to leave early GG is tired? I don't want to get stuck in the middle of nowhere with a shattered horse and no idea how to get home, so considering whether to carry my iPhone purely for its GPS capabilities!

Thank you!

How long is the hunt likely to last? Probably till about 3pm And how hard would it be to leave early GG is tired? The meet will be on sand and will not be to shattering I think they cover some ground but not at speed If your horse is fit you will have no problems with that meet. I don't want to get stuck in the middle of nowhere with a shattered horse and no idea how to get home, so considering whether to carry my iPhone purely for its GPS capabilities! Please do always take your phone just put it on silent.Thank you!

You will have a great time, reports please. What time did you finish on Saturday??

Thanks for the replies.

Simsar, I wasn't thinking when I typed, I meant newcomer's meet, not opening. Doh! Decided opening meet as our first non-autumn hunting was a bit too brave.

I am planning to leave around 2ish, partly because I know GG isn't as fit as he could be (don't get me wrong, he is fit, but I would like him fitter) and partly because I have to get home for house guests in the evening.

I would always carry a phone, but last time out took a small one rather than great iPhone brick that barely fits in breeches pocket! I am guessing its GPS capabilities will be useful, though. Is it rare for people to leave early?

Immoralorchid - when your neddy is back up and running, do PM me and we can quake in our boots together! Fingers crossed for a speedy recovery.

Hi,

I won't be out on saturday as have prior commitments, however yes, GPS would be very useful in the area you are off too! You will prob end up across the commons which are MASSIVE and all look very similar so getting back from to the boxes early is a bit of a nightmare unless you have a sense of direction akin to a homing pigeon.
