Hi all, just wondering if any of you have any experience with sub-mandibular lymph nodes. I'll start at the beginning, so as not to drip feed.

My horse has had an active sub-mandibular lymph node since I met her in November. Tested for strangles, which was negative, the vet said it was likely a kind of grass gland and advised to leave it alone. It subsided when she was kept in for two weeks, but this made her legs fill up.

Fast forward to 1st April, I had her vetted, vet noticed it again and expressed little concern. Could be teeth (done in January), a grass gland type thing or just because she's young (she is 6.) He also said she may be fighting off a mild virus like tonsillitis, as she coughed three times when he squeezed her upper airway. He told me to leave it, but call if it ruptured or if she became ill. She has not been ill since, bar a bit of nasal discharge for a few days about 6 weeks ago.

Now, the lymph node in question has doubled in size - it's about the size of a medium-sized egg if you take into account the bit that's tucked up under her jaw. The other side has also become active, and a second, smaller pair of lymph nodes have appeared directly underneath the first pair. She is slightly bothered if you put pressure on them.

We have recently moved yards, so I expected them to change with different grazing and being in at night for a week or so but there has been no change. The vet came last week and took blood and aspirated some fluid from the swellings. They were inconclusive but showed an elevated level of lymphoid cells so they are pretty sure they're lymph nodes. She's having a biopsy on Tuesday.

Does anybody have experience of anything like this? She is my first horse, I have of course been googling and presented with things like lymphosarcoma

A little googling is a dangerous thing!
The biopsy will give you more info, but i know how worrying it can be. On the good news front i am sure you found that lympho is rare and horses are usually very sick.
Hope this is a bit reassuring while you wait for more results.

Are you talking about the gland under the chin or behind? My horses gland under her chin (ie in front of where throat lash lies) is huge, orange size. Xrayed and she has a tooth root abscess...we are now 3 weeks in to a 6week or longer course of antibiotics and anti-inflammatory but she may require surgery to remove the tooth, which will be difficult as shes only 4!

Throat lash area but on the underside of her face, not in her throat if that makes sense!

6 weeks on we have a diagnosis of sarcoidosis or idiopathic systemic granulomatous disease and I'm waiting to hear it there are any other organs involved. Looking at 6 months + of steroids or immunosuppressants. I'd happily take a tooth abscess instead right now!
