Hello everyone, need some help or others experiences please. My 6yo cob has just been diagnosed with cysts in both stifles, both pretty much the same. Have any of you had experience of the prognosis? He gets really sore after only short durations of work in the school maybe 15mins if he's been working over 3days. We only want to hack about and do our local junping league.
The vets say the outlook is poor.
Thanks

Hi there!

My mare had OCD in both hocks and stifles she also had subchondral cysts (I have got the pics of the endoscopy) which were removed when operated on, this was as a big 4yr old, after a yr off and slowly bringing back to work we have since done dressage, xc, hunted, pleasure rides and SJ.

Im really sorry vet says the prognosis isnt good, best to be prepared for the worst but keep an open mind and ask lots of questions, in terms of treatment and long term care. Big hugs to your boy I will have fingers, toes and eyes crossed for you xx

My insurers paid out no problems, hers were ocd operations and i believe (without having my paperwk to hand) it came to just under 4k including xrays, nerve blocking, the operation, aftercare and a big tub of newmarket supplement.

Ok, will see what happens. Was your horse in a lot of discomfort? Tank is very grumpy and just feeling sorry for himself. It was hard to spot the lameness because both legs were lame, we thought he was a bit off on just one. I think what doesn't help is that he's a very well build sturdy fella. I'm told he will never jump, hard to know. Ta again. I'm going to get some of this cosquin eqine supplement, its supposed to be the dogs bit!!

she never showed discomfort, but when i had a friend of mine sit on her i saw how lame she was, she never put up any resistance but a slight dragging on the right hind in trot got me to have her xrayed and nerve blocked. Let me know how you get on :)

I had a 7yr WC with one he had steroid injections over 6wks. At first I didn't think it worked but after 6 months he was sound enough to hunt, now 6 yrs later he does endurance with his new very lightweight rider :D

Was he in discomfort? Tank is planting after about 10mins if he's been working for 3 days or more. He even started to buck which is so not like him. The worst of the 2 legs was also a bit swollen. Its his level of discomfort that concerns me. I have read that some horses don't suffer from much pain but are lame. Mine appears to be suffering quite a lot. He's also miserable in himself unless he's on bute.
Thanks for your positive info, I will just have to wait and see.
Ta
