substitute for bute

If looking for something to help with joint problems - homeopathy can sometimes help (get a consultation for a homeopathic vet for best remedy for your horse).

Devils Claw is often used too (have used with my horses). I use an Aloe Vera supplement with Glucosamine, MSM, Chondroitin with one of my horses everyday to help with arthritic joints - seems to do the trick! :)

Boswellia serrata is pain relieving and anti inflammatory without the side effects of devils claw. It is the main ingredient in vetrofen, but can be bought more cheaply.

How about Equimins Flexijoint - the liquid rather than the powder as that also contains Devil's Claw. It is guaranteed to work or your money back.
As an aside my horse is on Danilon rather than Bute and 20 paracetomol a day too.
I know your horse has a bowel condition. Can you lead it out and give it access to hedgerows and wayside forage? Your horse will pick all the herbs it feels it needs.
My horse is on week 11 of boxrest for stress lamintis. She will be in for months. I collect detox herbs freshly for her daily - cleavers, nettles, hawthorn tips and dandelion with the root. I offer her these at lunchtime - mid way between her pain meds, so there is no chance of them being 'detoxed' from her system.

Danalon (I think that's how you spell it) does the same thing as bute but is much less damaging on the liver, I think it's more expensive though

Danilon is simply bute with a sugar coating to make it more palatable. As far as I am aware the effects on the liver are exactly the same.

My vet said over time it will still damage liver (as the same as bute) but it is less harsh on stomach and liver, thanks for the info I will ask her some more questions :)

No difference in effect on the fit between danilon or bute. It has been disproven. Danilon is just a more palatable form.
