looking for substitutes to dengie hi fi molasses free. can't really justify nearly £20 for a sack of chaff, its ridiculous.

looking for something similar but cheaper, if possible.. any ideas?
 
Good god since when has it been that expensive?
I’ll be after an alternative too if it’s at that price near me ?
If it’s any cheaper the Healthy Hoof molasses free is much the same but with no fenugreek and a bit of garlic. I swap between the two if the shop hasn’t got the first In stock.
It’s about the only unmolassed chaff mine will eat.
 
I've used the Mollichaff Light Mollasses Free before and all the horses have happily eaten it. Just bear in mind though if comparing prices that it is a 12.5 kg bag.

I have started using Grazeon this year and the horses are all happily eating it.

Ive used Speedibeet before instead of unmolassed chaff, as you only need abit once its swelled-up and lasts ages or when i was really trying to save, i used to take a handful of hay and cut it up.

I did only have one horse, so didnt take long to prep!!
 
We feed the honeychop lite and healthy to the fatties- the Herby bits seem to make it more palatable to them than plain unmolassed chaff, but honeychop also do a plain straw chaff which is great if you need a lot of bulk with low calories- it's not as tasty though (or ours sisnt think so). Bran is also an option for a low calorie bulk feed? (ETA- to bulk out hard feed, I'd not recommend it as a hay replacer)

I use Grasstatic though being a grass chaff sugar is higher than alfafa or straw. It's gone up a lot as well, this time last year i was paying £7.99, then it was £9.99 and last month went up to £11.70

If you don't mind a pellet, their meadow magic or alfalfa amazing are good value.

this is actually a good point. i wonder how many of us feed things just because its what we've always done and what we're used to. generally my mare gets some chaff and nuts as a gesture but its my gelding who needs it the most really.

thanks all for the suggestions. i'm not going to go for honeychop as i've had it before and both horses weren't keen. hey ho, trip to the feed store ahead!
 
Honeychop lite and healthy, it's molasses, soya and alfalfa free.

I've recently stopped feeding pony nuts as I had this same thought. Mine only gets a feed to get supplements in so now just has a bit more honeychop than she did before.

Mine doesn't really like chaff but loves Allen and Page Fast Fibre, so if you need something very low on sugar and starch, I'd always recommend that.

It has gone up I know just like everything at the moment it seems ?

Mines the opposite, doesn't like sloppy feeds. Can sneak some Copra if there's enough chaff to give a bit of chew. He needs weight so grass chaff is a good option for us.
